Costa Rica (and Panama) is by far the safest country in Central America, and in line with Murphy’s first law, that’s where my big backpack got stolen (from under the bus, on December 31st). I’ve been traveling for a few weeks now with just my small backpack, and it’s actually working fine, but it’s a real bummer that I lost so many belongings. Murphy was probably taking a nap when I decided to send my film rolls to the Netherlands two days earlier. So, for those who can’t wait, you’ll have to drop by my parents’ place to see the photos.
Still, New Year’s Eve was a success. Everyone was on the streets, and it seems the goal is to throw the fireworks where most people are gathered. Without a credit card, a bank that’s never open, and an ATM not suitable for tourists, we arrived at a city with a working ATM, using our last dollar. That meant spending a whole day on a bus just to get some money. Then we went to a kind of rainforest for Americans (which means well-maintained trails and an overly high entrance fee). In that area, we spotted a toucan and a toucanette (let’s call it the little brother of the Toucan).
