After landing and the joy of seeing that your debit card can convert a PIN code into a stack of local currency in this country, the taxi mafia comes into play. But I can proudly say that, thanks to a short side note in the Lonely Planet, I managed to avoid them for the first time after arriving in a new country by walking straight to the bus stop 500 meters away. Some tried to chip away at my confidence by shouting “far far away” and “taxi cheap,” but to no avail. Not even five minutes later, I had strengthened the Mongolian economy with my first quarter and was on the bus to my hostel.
