Backpacking in Peaks of the Balkan trail
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 24, 2026

Most people realize too late that the real advantage of the Peaks of the Balkans is how many wild, high-alpine days you can string together without ever touching a road again; you live in the mountains, not just visit them. On the Albanian side, the trail runs through the far north, in the Accursed Mountains above Theth and Valbona, right up against Kosovo and Montenegro. It’s a multi-day loop that feels big: long climbs, loose rock, snow patches early in the season, and villages spaced just far enough apart that you have to respect your pace. The scenery earns every bead of sweat—knife-edge passes, limestone walls, meadows that actually still have cows and not just Instagrammers. Public transport to Theth or Valbona is doable but clunky compared with easier Albanian classics like Mount Dajti or the Llogara Pass trails. If you want casual, hike elsewhere; if you want to feel small and strong at the same time, start here.

  • Valbona Valley — A lush, glacier-carved valley with a fast, milky river, pine forests and wide alpine meadows. It feels unexpectedly green and sheltered compared with much of the range, and the cluster of budget guesthouses makes it the easiest place to rest and resupply on the Albanian side.
  • Qafa e Valbonës (Valbona Pass) — The classic ridge crossing: a steep slog up, then one of the most dramatic panoramic drops into Theth and the surrounding peaks. The view across jagged summits and down into both valleys is the kind of panorama that makes you forget the blisters — my personal favorite on this section of the trail.

  • Theth village & Grunas Waterfall — A tiny stone village that still lives by old mountain rhythms: watch for the defensive kulla tower, meet locals, and cool off under the Grunas waterfall into a glacier-fed pool. It’s a rare mix of genuine village culture and easy, scenic side-hikes.
  • Jezerca massif / Buni i Jezercës cirque — Jagged, alpine terrain that looks more like the Alps than what people expect from the Balkans: steep walls, hanging glaciers (in season), and a huge rocky amphitheatre. If you’re into stark, high-mountain scenery and photography, this section is the showpiece.
  • Shepherd katuns & wildlife encounters — Scattered summer pastures and simple katun huts where shepherds make fresh cheese and welcome travelers; keep your eyes up for chamois, foxes and golden eagles. Those close cultural encounters, quiet nights under sharp stars, and the chance to eat real mountain food are what set this trail apart from more touristy hikes.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Weather: Spring and early autumn deliver the best trail conditions—expect dry paths and crisp air. Summers can scorch, pushing temperatures above 30°C (86°F), turning the climb into a sweat-drenching slog. Winters slam the trail with snow and ice, shutting down most routes.

  • Temperature: May and September offer a sweet spot, with daytime highs around 20-25°C (68-77°F) and cool nights dipping to 10°C (50°F). This balance keeps your body moving without overheating or freezing.

  • Daylight Hours: Late spring and early fall grant you roughly 12-14 hours of daylight—enough to push hard and still savor the sunset from a ridge. Winter days shrink to 8 hours, cramping your pace and forcing early stops.

  • Crowds: Peak summer draws local hikers and some international trekkers, especially in August.

  • Crowds: Peak summer draws local hikers and some international trekkers, especially in August. Spring and autumn see fewer people, giving you a more solitary, raw experience on the trail.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer hosts mountain festivals and shepherd gatherings, adding cultural spice but also noise and bustle. Off-season, the trail feels like your own secret, with wildlife and wildflowers filling the silence.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide prices spike in July and August. Shoulder seasons (May, September) offer better deals and more flexible bookings, letting you stretch your budget without sacrificing comfort.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail in late May or early September to dodge the heat and crowds, lock in solid daylight, and catch the mountains at their most alive—without paying a premium.
