One of the first real decisions in Butrint is whether you treat it as a quick archaeological stop from Sarandë or give it half a day and slow down; that choice decides if you just tick ruins off a list or actually feel the place. Butrint National Park sits in Albania’s far south, near the Greek border and Ksamil, wrapped around a lagoon opposite Corfu. For backpackers, it’s more ruins-and-wetlands than big-mountain hiking: short, easy trails through forest, boardwalks by the water, birds everywhere, but no serious elevation or multi-day treks. The scenery is quietly beautiful rather than dramatic, and the wildlife is better if you’re patient and visit early. It’s easy to reach by bus or furgon, entrance fees are reasonable, but summer tour groups can clog the main paths. No camping inside, and budget beds are mostly back in Ksamil or Sarandë. Compared with Llogara or Valbona, Butrint is softer, more historical than hardcore—worth it if you like atmosphere and archaeology, less so if you’re chasing big alpine miles.
