Backpacking in Lurë-Dejë Mountain
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 18, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Lurë-Dejë as a simple “lake district,” but the surprise is how rough and human it still feels: more half-forgotten mountain villages and logging tracks than polished national park. It sits in northeast Albania, in the Dibër region, between Peshkopi and Rrëshen, folded into the eastern side of the central mountains. For backpackers, it’s a trade: wild, glacial-lake scenery, quiet ridgelines, eagles and bears in the background, but also patchy trail-marking, limited public transport, and weather-beaten infrastructure. Access usually means a bumpy furgon or hitching; fees are low or inconsistently collected. Wild camping is common but basic guesthouses are thin on the ground. Compared with Valbonë or Theth, Lurë-Dejë is lonelier, less dramatic, more work—and exactly why some people end up loving it.

  • Lurë Lakes (the glacial lake basin) — A string of around a dozen crystal-blue glacial lakes clustered close together; in summer they glitter like jewels between pines, in winter many freeze into perfect white mirrors. Easy to reach from the park entrance and the single best spot for picture-perfect reflections and quiet lakeside camping. (Personal favorite — I keep going back for the light at dusk.)
  • The Dejë Ridge / summit viewpoints — Rocky ridgelines that reward a steady climb with panoramic views over the Mat valley and surrounding Albanian highlands. Routes range from steep day hikes to tougher scrambles; excellent for sunrise, long vistas and map-reading practice when the wind turns up.

Routes range from steep day hikes to tougher scrambles; excellent for sunrise, long vistas and map-reading practice when the wind turns up.
  • Pine and beech forests — Thick, old-growth stands that smell like resin and shade the trails; great for cool midday breaks, mushrooms/berry season (be careful and know what you pick) and spotting smaller forest birds. The contrast of dark woods against open alpine meadows is one of the park’s signatures.
  • Wildlife watching — The park hosts brown bears, wolves, roe deer, wild boar and raptors (sightings aren’t guaranteed, but possible if you move quietly at dawn/dusk). Best to watch from a distance, make noise on singletrack climbs, and stash food properly — the excitement is in the tracks and calls as much as the brief glimpses.
  • Hiking network and day loops — A mix of short, well-marked lake loops and longer trails that link into the Dejë massif. Routes offer varied terrain: forest paths, rocky slopes, alpine meadows. Good for planning anything from an easy half-day to a proper multi-day backcountry push.
  • Winter landscapes and snow routes — The lakes and lower trails freeze and the whole place turns quiet and bright; perfect for snowshoeing or low-traffic winter hikes. Access gets trickier — be prepared for snow and limited services, but the frozen lakes are worth the extra effort.
  • Traditional mountain villages and local culture — Small villages around the park where shepherding and mountain food still rule: simple guesthouses, fresh cheese, and people who know the trails. Combining a walk with a night in a village keeps the trip more authentic and cheaper than remote lodges.
