- Great Prespa Lake — The park’s centrepiece: a high-altitude freshwater lake with clear water, reed fringes and mountains all around. It’s where sunsets get theatrical and where most day-to-day wildlife activity happens, so plan to spend time wandering the shore.
- Maligrad Island — A tiny island in the Albanian part of the lake with a ruined 14th-century church and atmospheric stonework. You get there by a short local boat trip; it’s quiet, photogenic and my personal favorite for a slow afternoon exploring and watching waterbirds.
- Wetlands and birdwatching — Reedbeds, shallow bays and marshes that attract huge numbers of migratory and resident birds, including Dalmatian pelicans, cormorants and various ducks. Bring binoculars; early morning or late afternoon is prime time.

- Hiking to surrounding ridges and viewpoints — Numerous easy-to-moderate trails climb the hills around the lake; from the ridgelines you get sweeping views across three countries (Albania, North Macedonia, Greece). Great for sunrise, simple multi-hour treks and wildflower spotting in spring.
- Boat trips and fishing culture — Hire a skiff from a village pier and you’ll see the lake differently: close-up birdlife, fishermen tending nets, and access to little coves and islands. It’s cheap, meditative and often the best way to meet locals.
- Mosaic of habitats and conservation story — The park isn’t just one landscape: wetlands, farmland, oak and beech patches and alpine meadows knit together here, supporting rare freshwater species and long-term cross-border conservation projects. If you like biodiversity, this mix is the real draw.
