Backpacking in Barbuda Caribana
👌 Worth visitingfestival ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Barbuda Caribana suits backpackers who like their festivals sandy, sweaty and a little improvised, and who don’t mind a ferry ride to get there. If you need big-stage production, reliable air-conditioning or a packed nightlife strip, you may find it less rewarding. The festival takes place on Barbuda, the quiet sister island in the north of Antigua and Barbuda, with events centered on Codrington and the beaches nearby. Expect soca, calypso, steelpan and DJ sets, plus masquerade-style costumes, with a crowd of Barbudans, returning family and a handful of curious visitors. It runs over a long weekend in early summer. Book your bed and return ferry well ahead, since rooms are few and sailings can sell out. Bring cash, because card machines and ATMs are unreliable on the island. Unlike Antigua’s Carnival, which sprawls across St. John’s with huge parades, this one feels like a village party.

Ranked #4 festival in Antigua & Barbuda
What makes this festival worth celebrating

Barbuda Caribana pulls backpackers because it is one of the few chances to see Barbuda’s community gathered in one place. The island has roughly 1,600 residents, so a festival here means you quickly stop being a stranger. You’ll end up in the same food line as the people playing on stage, and that is how invitations to the after-party happen. It is also a good reason to cross to Barbuda at all, since most visitors only see it on a quick day trip. Time your trip around the festival and you can stay a few nights, wander the empty Princess Diana Beach in daylight and still be back for the evening music. Costs run lower than at Caribbean carnivals on bigger islands, mostly because there are no resort-style packages, only local guesthouses, grilled lobster stands and rum shacks. 💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Street Parade in Codrington: The main procession winds through the island’s only town, with costumed groups, truck-mounted sound systems and neighbors cheering from their porches. It is small enough that you can walk alongside the bands.
  2. Beach Parties on the Coast: Daytime sessions on the sand mix DJs, soca and cold drinks with the Caribbean right there for cooling off. They are relaxed and easy to join.
  3. Local Food Stalls: Look for grilled fish, lobster in season, johnnycakes and rice dishes sold from roadside tents and yards. Prices are usually friendlier than in Antigua’s resort areas.
  4. Steelpan and Calypso Performances: Live pan and calypso acts give the festival its Caribbean roots, and you’ll hear Barbudan storytelling in the lyrics, often with plenty of humor.
  5. Costume and Cultural Displays:

  5. Costume and Cultural Displays: Handmade costumes and traditional dress show off island creativity, and the makers often happily explain their designs if you ask.
For a first visit, the street parade in Codrington is the one to catch, because it gathers the whole island in one place and shows you the festival at its most local.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Codrington is the best base for backpackers, because the parades and most events are within walking distance and you can move around on foot after dark with little worry. Barbuda has very few rooms, so the village itself offers small guesthouses and rented rooms run by locals, which is where solo travelers meet islanders and other festival visitors over breakfast and rides to the beach. Staying here means you skip taxi costs and can drift between the street party and your bed in minutes.

The second option is the Low Bay beach strip along the island’s west coast, a short drive from town. It is quieter and better for sleeping off a long night, and it suits travelers who want daytime swims between events. Pooling a taxi with other guests is the usual way to get back and forth, and the sociable atmosphere comes from sharing rides.
If Barbuda is full, the fallback is staying in St. John’s or the Jolly Harbour area on Antigua and taking the ferry across each day. That works for one day trip, but the boat schedule limits late-night fun, so sleeping on Barbuda is far better.

🍲 FoodLocal Flavors for Backpackers

Expect grilled lobster to be the star, since Barbuda is known for it, served with rice and peas, plantain and salad at stalls near the parade route and on the beach. Look for fried fish, jerk chicken and goat water (a spiced stew), plus johnnycakes for a cheap snack in the morning.
For drinks, local Wadadli beer and rum punch are everywhere, and fresh coconut water is sold straight from the shell in the heat. Sorrel and ginger drinks appear around celebration time.
The lobster plate is worth the splurge for authenticity, ideally eaten on a plastic chair within earshot of a steel band. Portions are generous, so splitting a plate with a new friend is normal and lets you sample more.

Bring cash, because most vendors do not take cards, and small bills make life easier. Prices are usually in US dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars, so ask before ordering. Lines grow long when a parade ends, and cooking is done to order, so allow time and eat before the peak rush. Bring a bottle to refill, as drinks add up quickly.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Barbuda Caribana isn’t only about the stage; the small side events in Codrington yards and beach bars are where the best conversations happen. I would arrive a day early, wander the town once the heat drops, and say hello to everyone, because that gets you the invitations. Pack cash, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen.
