Most of the music costs nothing, which is a real advantage when a festival runs ten days. Tamworth Country Music Festival takes over the city of Tamworth, in the New England region of New South Wales in Australia, about four to five hours' drive northwest of Sydney, every January. Expect country, bluegrass, folk and roots, a crowd of caravan retirees, young buskers and cowboy-hatted families, and hundreds of free gigs on the main street. I arrived on an overnight bus, and the driver announced a stop with the words “fifteen minutes, mate”, then vanished for forty. Nobody complained. Two strangers swapped phone numbers and a guitarist tuned up beside the bins. The first sound I heard in Tamworth was a banjo drifting from a bakery doorway on Peel Street.
