Backpacking in Codrington College
👀 For curious travelersunique site ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 20, 2026

Most people come for the avenue of tall royal palms and the hilltop Anglican theological college, one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Just as worthwhile, and often skipped, is the cliff edge behind the grounds, where the land drops to a wild Atlantic coast. Codrington College sits in the parish of St. John, on the rugged east side of Barbados, inland from Bath. I say go on a weekday morning when the light is soft and the tour buses haven’t arrived. The chapel and lily pond deserve your time, while the small gift counter doesn’t. Unlike Farley Hill National Park, a ruined mansion with big views, this is a working college you can walk through.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #10 unique site in Barbados
What sets this place apart

Codrington College gives you a quiet counterweight to Barbados’s beach strip, and it costs very little to enjoy. The mile-long drive lined with royal palms is the kind of walk you rarely get on an island this busy, and you can do it at your own pace with no guide. The grounds also hold a lily pond thick with pads and a chapel that still serves students, so the place feels lived in rather than staged. It slots into an east coast loop easily: the surf town of Bath and the sea cliffs at the end of the property sit close by, so you can fill a lazy half day without a car rental if you use the buses. Pair it with Bathsheba for boulders and surf.

Bathsheba on the east coast is the best base for backpackers, about 15 minutes by car from Codrington College.
It is a small, surf-focused village with guesthouses, casual rooms and a handful of beach bars, and the Atlantic rock pools and long empty beach make it easy to meet other travelers. Oistins and the south coast around Christ Church offer the widest choice of budget hostels and shared apartments. The Friday night fish fry is the big social draw, and buses to Bridgetown run frequently. Expect roughly 45 to 60 minutes to reach Codrington from there, with a connection.

Bridgetown suits those who want the cheapest transport links, since most routes start at its terminals. It is livelier by day than by night, so take care after dark and use taxis.

Staying right beside the college itself is not practical, as the immediate area is rural with few places to sleep.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Codrington College looks best from the far end of the lawn, so skip the rush to the building and turn around halfway along the palm avenue. The gentle slope gives you the long view of columns and sky. Bring water, since the walk down to the cliff path has little shade.
