Backpacking in Braslav Lakes Trail
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 30, 2026

Your boots squelch in the damp pine needles, mosquitoes whine in your ears, and somewhere through the trees a loon cuts the silence with a sharp, lonely call. You push through a patch of wet grass, and suddenly the forest spits you out onto a low, sandy shore: flat water, reed-fringed, sky doubled in the lake like glass. This is the Braslav Lakes Trail in far northwestern Belarus, threading around the lakes of Braslav Lakes National Park near the Latvian border. The hike is low-altitude, rolling, and more about distance than climbing, with long, forested stretches broken by big-water views and sleepy villages. It’s easy to reach Braslav town by bus from Minsk, but trailheads can feel under-signed and a bit improvised. Compared to Belarus’s shorter forest walks near cities, Braslav feels wilder and more spacious, but also muddier, buggier, and less polished.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Braslav Lakes Trail

  • Panoramic viewpoints over the lake cluster — Several ridges along the trail open onto sweeping views of dozens of interlocking, glacially carved lakes; those layered blue-and-green vistas are the “why” of Braslav and make for killer photos at sunrise or golden hour.
  • Lake Dryvyaty (Drivyaty) — the big water — The largest lake in the park has clear water, islands and long sandy shores, so it’s the best spot for a swim, a picnic or to watch fisherman and local boats threading between islets.
  • Sandy beaches, pine ridges and dunes — Unlike many inland hikes, parts of the trail run over warm, sandy beaches backed by pine forests and low dunes, giving a coastal-feel inland and pleasant places to rest or sleep under the pines.
  • Peat bogs, reedbeds and wildlife — The trail skirts bogs and marshes

  • Lakeside villages and wooden architecture — Small fishing villages and old wooden houses dot the route, offering a taste of rural Belarusian life — friendly locals, smoked fish at a kiosk, and simple churchyards that connect the landscape to local culture.

  • Crowds: Summer weekends bring local families and weekend warriors, especially around popular lakeside spots. Weekdays and shoulder seasons offer solitude, letting you own the trail and hear the forest’s pulse without interruption.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer invites swimming, fishing, and open-air camping, while autumn paints the landscape in fiery hues, perfect for photography and quiet reflection. Winter seals the trail under snow, turning it into a cross-country ski challenge for the hardened few.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local services peak in summer, nudging prices up by 20-30%. Booking in spring or autumn can save you cash and secure better spots in guesthouses or campsites.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early September—cooler air, fewer crowds, and the trail’s raw beauty at its most accessible, letting you move fast and feel every step.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

The Braslav Lakes Trail is a wild ride. You’ll feel the crunch of gravel underfoot and the cool breeze off the lakes. The surprise? That moment when you stumble upon a secluded spot, just you and the water, with a view that makes you forget the miles behind you. But a heads-up: the trails can get muddy after rain, so pack those sturdy boots. Embrace the grit; the reward is a cold beer at a local tavern, where stories flow as freely as the drinks.
