Backpacking in Cup Match
🏆 Top pickfestival ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Cup Match suits travelers who like their culture loud, local and shared with strangers who quickly become friends. If you want a polished, ticketed music festival with headliners, you may find it less rewarding. This is a two-day cricket classic and public holiday, played between the Somerset and St. George’s clubs. The grounds alternate between Somerset Cricket Club in the west end of Bermuda and St. George’s Cricket Club in the island’s east end. The vibe is family tailgate meets island reunion, with gombey drummers, DJs, rum swizzles, fish sandwiches and tents pitched along the boundary. Cricket is almost secondary to the socializing, and you will see people wearing club colors, light blue for Somerset and red for St. George’s, with total commitment. Arrive early, claim shade, and let a neighbor explain the rules to you; you leave with a lunch invitation. Before going, know that the match falls on the Thursday and Friday around the start of August, so book lodging and ferry plans well ahead.

Ranked #1 festival in Bermuda
What makes this festival worth celebrating

Cup Match is the one moment each year when Bermuda drops its reserved reputation and throws a two-day party for itself. Backpackers build routes around it because it is a rare chance to join a local celebration instead of watching one from behind a rope. The rivalry between Somerset and St. George’s dates back to the 1800s, and it commemorates emancipation, so the mood carries real meaning beneath the music. Strike up a conversation at the boundary and you will be handed a plate, a seat or a strong opinion about the batting order within minutes.
The cost helps too. Bermuda is a pricey island, yet entry to the grounds is modest and you can bring a cooler, so a day here costs far less than a typical night out in Hamilton. The crowd is mostly Bermudians, with a few visitors, which makes the tent … read more 👉

Plan it as the centerpiece of an early August stay, with beaches and the Royal Naval Dockyard on the days around it.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Cup Match

  1. The Somerset vs St. George’s Cricket Match: The rivalry is the heart of it, played over two days in traditional white and club colors. Even if you never learn the rules, the roars after a wicket or a big hit are contagious.
  2. Gombey Dancers: Troupes in towering feathered headdresses and bright masks move to snare and bass drums and whistles. The tradition has African, Caribbean and Indigenous roots, and it is Bermuda’s signature performance.
  3. The Tent Village: Families set up decorated tents and canopies around the field, often for days. Wander through and you find music, dominoes, grandparents holding court and plenty of offers of a plate.
  4. Fish Sandwiches and Local Food: Stalls sell fried fish on raisin bread, codfish cakes and other island staples. Grab one in the shade between overs and you taste

  5. The Rum Swizzle and Dark ’n’ Stormy Scene: Bars and coolers fuel the party, and these two Bermudian cocktails are the drinks of choice. Ask whoever is next to you which they prefer and expect an argument.
Allow a full day at the grounds for the real flavor, and both days if you want to follow the match to its finish.

🌤️ When to go?When is the celebration of Cup Match?

Cup Match is held on a Thursday and Friday in late July or early August, the two days after the first Thursday before the August 1 Emancipation Day and Somers’ Day holidays, with the cricket played at the Somerset Cricket Club in Sandys and St. George’s Cricket Club in St. George’s, alternating hosts each year.
  • Best day: Thursday is the opener and the better one to catch, since the crowds are fresh, the bowling is early and the tents are at full volume. Friday decides the winner, and the mood tightens.
  • Weather: Expect 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F), high humidity and short, sharp showers. Bring a hat, sunscreen, a poncho and a folding chair or cushion.
  • Booking: Book flights and beds two to three months ahead, because rooms near the host ground sell out and rates can climb 20 to 40 percent.

Buy a ferry or bus day pass in advance and plan your return before the final overs.

🛏️ Where to stay? How to pick the right area

Hamilton is the best base for backpackers, because buses and ferries leave from there for both match venues and it has the island’s widest choice of budget beds, grocery stores and cheap lunch counters. It is also the safest place to walk back at night, with lit streets and plenty of people around.
For a social crowd, the City of Hamilton and its Front Street waterfront draw most solo travelers, so you will meet others heading to the match on the same morning bus. Pembroke, just to the east, is quieter and a little cheaper, with an easy walk to the ferry terminal.

If Somerset hosts, look at Sandys Parish and the Dockyard area. It is the closest option to the ground and the ferry from Hamilton runs straight to Somerset Bridge, so you can skip the crawl on the road. The sleepy lanes here are very safe, but evenings are quiet, so bring your own plans.
If St. George’s hosts, stay in St. George’s town itself. It is compact, walkable and friendly, and you can be at the ground in minutes. Choices are fewer and fill first, so book early. Guesthouses and small inns are more common than dorms on the island, and you should expect to share a kitchen with other travelers.

🍲 FoodLocal Cuisine & Drinks

Cup Match runs on fish sandwiches, and the best ones come from the stalls and tents around the grounds: fried fish fillet on thick raisin bread, with tartar sauce and a squeeze of hot pepper. Try one early, before the lines grow.
The other local standard is codfish and potatoes, the traditional Bermudian breakfast, plus fish chowder seasoned with black rum and sherry pepper sauce. Grilled jerk chicken, curry goat, hot dogs and burgers come from the family tents, along with peas and rice and macaroni and cheese, which many locals take as a side to everything.
For drinks, the signature is the Dark ’n Stormy, black rum with ginger beer, and many people carry their own cooler of rum swizzle and Gosling’s. Local beer and soda are sold on site, and water is worth buying early because the sun is relentless. … read more 👉

The real festival culture is in the tents. Families set up on the hillside with folding chairs, music and big pots, and a friendly nod often gets you a plate or a taste. Bring small bills, since many stalls take cash only and card readers are unreliable in a crowd. Servings are big enough to share, so split a plate and try more.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Cup Match takes place every year on a Thursday and Friday in late July or early August, just before the August 1 Emancipation Day and Somers’ Day holidays. The two days of cricket alternate between Somerset Cricket Club in Sandys and St. George’s Cricket Club in St. George’s, so check the host before you book. Gates open in the morning and play runs most of the day.
Attending Cup Match costs roughly US$15 to 30 per day for general entry, with higher prices for reserved seating or club tents. Food and drinks add about US$40 to 70 a day, since a fish sandwich is around US$8 to 12. Bus and ferry day passes cost about US$16, and accommodation is the biggest expense at roughly US$130 to 200 a night.
Cup Match tickets can usually be bought at the gate, but advance purchase is wise for reserved seating and club tents, which sell out. The bigger need to book ahead is accommodation and flights, which should be reserved two to three months in advance for the late July or early August dates. Bring cash for stalls, since not all take cards.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Cup Match is best for sociable travelers who enjoy being swept along by a crowd of locals and do not mind a long, hot day outside. I would bring a hat, sunscreen and a folding chair, and pick a side so you have someone to cheer with. Skip rigid plans. The best moments here come from saying yes to whatever the next tent offers.
