Backpacking in Warwick Long Bay
🌟 Highlightbeach ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 20, 2026

You come down the path from South Road, and the dunes open up so suddenly that you stop mid-step: pink-tinged sand, a long curve of surf, and wind carrying salt and cedar. Warwick Long Bay beach sits on the south shore of Bermuda, in Warwick Parish, roughly west of Hamilton. It is the longest stretch of sand on the island, and that length is the point. Even on a busy afternoon you can walk a few minutes and have your own patch. The scenery is excellent, with low dunes, scrubby vegetation and rocky outcrops at the western end. Swimming is good on calm days, but the south-shore swell can bring rip currents and rough shore break, so read the flags. There is no real snorkeling here. Facilities are minimal, so bring water and snacks, and go on a weekday morning for the quietest sand. Walk west along the beach and a short trail leads to Horseshoe Bay, which has more facilities and many more people. Warwick Long Bay is wilder, emptier and far less polished.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #2 beach in Bermuda
Why Warwick Long Bay should be on your travel list

Warwick Long Bay beach earns its stop because it gives you the south shore at its most open, with the longest sand stretch on Bermuda and almost none of the infrastructure that thins out its famous neighbor. Backpackers come for the space. You can lay out a towel, eat a picnic you carried in, and not hear anyone else's playlist. It also works well as a pause on a day of moving around the island, since the beach sits on the main road with a quick path down. The second draw is the walk. From the sand you can follow the dune trail west toward Horseshoe Bay, passing rocky coves and low cliffs, and see how different two beaches a few minutes apart can feel. Stay for the light as well: late afternoon turns the pale pink sand soft and warm against the blue-green water. It suits travelers who like their beaches plain, quiet and unmanaged.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Warwick Long Bay

  1. The long pink-sand shoreline: This is what the beach is known for. The sand stretches far enough that you can walk a good while and still be on one continuous curve, with dunes behind and Atlantic swell in front. Come early for the quietest stretch.
  2. Dune walk to Horseshoe Bay: A trail runs west over the dunes and rocky coves to the next beach. You get changing views of the coastline and a clear comparison between a wild beach and a busy one.
  3. Swimming on calm days: When the surf is gentle, the water is clear and a lovely turquoise. Check the flags first, since the south shore can have rough waves and rip currents.
  4. Picnic among the dunes: With few facilities nearby, a packed lunch is the way to eat here. Find a spot sheltered by the dune grass, out of the wind, and watch the waves roll in.
  5. Late-afternoon

  5. Late-afternoon light walk: The sand takes on a soft pink glow as the sun lowers, and the crowds thin. It is a calm, free way to end a day, with no nightlife to speak of.
For a first visit, start with the long pink-sand shoreline, because simply walking it shows you what makes this beach different.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Late Spring (May to June): Warwick Long Bay beach is at its best from May to June, with air around 22 to 27°C (72 to 81°F), sea water warming past 21°C (70°F), and long daylight of about 14 hours. Crowds stay thin and rooms cost less than in summer.
  • Summer (July to September): Hot and humid at 28 to 31°C (82 to 88°F), with sea around 26 to 28°C (79 to 82°F). This is the best swimming and the busiest, priciest stretch, especially when cruise ships dock. Hurricane risk peaks from August through September.
  • Autumn (October to November): Air of 23 to 27°C (73 to 81°F) and still-warm water make this a quiet, lower-priced window. Daylight drops to around 10 to 11 hours.
  • Winter (December to April): Air runs 17 to 21°C (63 to 70°F) and the water about 18 to 20°C (64 to 68°F), too cool for most swimmers.

Walking the dunes and the South Shore Park trail is pleasant, you will often have the sand to yourself, and accommodation is cheapest. Daylight is about 10 to 12 hours.
Aim for late May or early June to get warm water before summer rates and crowds arrive.

Southampton and the Warwick parish shoreline give backpackers the most practical base near Warwick Long Bay beach, because Bermuda has almost no dorm-style hostels and the budget options are guesthouses, small cottages and shared rentals. Expect roughly US$120 to 250 a night in season, and less in winter.

Warwick, along South Road, puts you a short walk from the sand and the trailhead that links Warwick Long Bay with Horseshoe Bay and the other South Shore beaches. The area is residential and quiet, so it suits travelers who want early swims and sunset walks rather than nightlife. A small grocery and a few casual food spots are nearby, which helps with self-catering and keeping costs down.
Southampton, just to the west, adds easy access to Horseshoe Bay and the Elbow Beach side of the coast, plus more rental choices. Both areas sit on the main bus routes toward Hamilton, the capital, where you will find the widest choice of cheaper rooms, bars and ferry links. Staying in Hamilton costs a little less, but the bus trip to the beach takes 20 to 30 minutes each way.
Book early for summer, since the limited beds fill fast. Shared apartments suit solo travelers best.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Warwick Long Bay beach is generally safe and calm for a South Shore beach, but it faces open Atlantic swell, so conditions change with the weather. On quiet days the long sandy bay has gentle water in the shallows, and a reef line offshore breaks much of the energy. After storms or strong southerly winds, expect heavier surf, a pull along the shore and occasional rip currents near the edges, so wade rather than swim when waves are large. There are no lifeguards here, so swim near other people and stay in your depth.
Jellyfish and Portuguese man o’ war drift in on some summer days, so check for purple floats along the tide line before you get in. Rocky patches and reef can be sharp, and water shoes help when snorkeling.

The sun is strong from May to September and there is little shade, so bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water. Theft is rare, but keep your phone and wallet out of sight and do not leave bags unattended. Locals often walk the dunes in the evening, which is a good time to visit.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

The easiest way to reach Warwick Long Bay beach is by bus from Hamilton. Take a route toward Southampton along South Road, about 20 to 30 minutes, and get off near the Warwick Long Bay stop, then walk a short path down to the sand. A single bus ride costs around US$5, and taxis from Hamilton run roughly US$25 to 35. You can also walk the South Shore Park trail from Horseshoe Bay in about 20 to 30 minutes.
Warwick Long Bay beach is good for swimming on calm days and decent for relaxed snorkeling along the rocky edges, but it is not a surf destination. Water is warmest from June to October at around 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F), and there are no lifeguards. Waves can build after storms and winter fronts, and bodyboarding is sometimes possible then, though rips and rocks make it a poor choice for beginners.
Yes, Warwick Long Bay beach is free to visit, and it sits inside the South Shore Park, so there is no entry fee or gate. Parking is limited and small lots nearby are free, while the bus costs about US$5 each way. There are no rental stands or showers on the sand, so bring water and food, and budget about US$10 to 20 if you buy lunch at a nearby shop.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Warwick Long Bay beach trips up travelers who show up empty-handed, expecting a snack bar and loungers like the neighboring beach. Pack water, food and sun protection before you leave. I would go on a weekday morning, walk the length of the sand first, then take the dune trail west if you want company and facilities afterward.
