Everyone shows up to Fernando de Noronha thinking it’s one single magic beach where dolphins high‑five you on arrival; it’s actually an island archipelago with multiple beaches, and you’ll mostly be high‑fiving your empty wallet. It sits off Brazil’s northeast coast, in the state of Pernambuco, a quick flight from Recife or Natal and a long way from “cheap and easy.”

As a backpacker destination, Noronha is gorgeous, regulated, and expensive in a way that feels almost personal. The water is absurdly clear, the sand is clean, and the snorkeling and diving are legitimately world‑class; turtles and rays are just… there. Surf can be excellent in season, but swimming can be rough on the open‑ocean side. Crowds are capped, so it never feels like Rio’s Ipanema chaos, but you pay environmental fees, buses are limited, and “budget” pousadas and snack bars still cost more than many mainland beach towns like Pipa or Jericoacoara.
