Backpacking in Jericoacoara
🏆 Top pickbeach ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 26, 2026

Everyone arrives in Jericoacoara expecting a deserted paradise and then looks confused when there’s a line for sunset. It’s not a secret surf shack; it’s a small, sand-street resort town at the edge of a national park in Ceará, northeastern Brazil, and word got out a long time ago. For backpackers, Jeri is a trade: you give up some solitude, you get a lot of easy fun. The beach itself is wide, windy, and better for kitesurfing and windsurfing than lazy swimming; the water’s warm but often choppy, and the real postcard moments are the dunes and lagoons nearby, not the main strip. The village is sandy, mostly clean, and packed with hostels, caipirinhas, and late-night forró. It’s pricier and more crowded than smaller Ceará spots like Barra Grande or Flecheiras, but far more lively and social. You come here to meet people, not to meditate.

The social scene? It’s buzzing. Travelers from all walks of life gather here, swapping stories over beach bonfires or in cozy bars. You’ll meet fellow wanderers who share the same absurdities of travel, and that camaraderie is priceless.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  • Sunset Dune gathering — The daily ritual: everyone climbs a steep golden dune, sits on the warm sand and watches the sun melt into the ocean. It’s not just about the view — people slide down the dune, share snacks, and the colors on the sand and sea are unreal. (Daytime to sunset; my personal favorite.)
  • Pedra Furada rock arch — A sculpted volcanic-looking arch carved by wind and waves, best seen at low tide or framed by the setting sun. It’s a short sandy walk from town and makes for those postcard photos that actually live up to the hype.
  • Blue-and-white lagoons — Shallow, gin-clear freshwater lagoons ringed by soft sand and palm hammocks; you can float, sip a cold drink in a hammock barely over the water, or nap in full sunshine without waves or crowds. Feels like a private oasis

  • World-class wind- and kite-sports — Constant, predictable trade winds turn Jeri into a kiting and windsurfing playground: wide launch areas, flat spots for learning and open water for tricks. Even if you don’t kite, watching the colorful sails against the dunes is half the fun.
  • Night beach vibe & stargazing — Nightlife here isn’t neon clubs; it’s barefoot bonfires, live acoustic forró or samba, and almost zero light pollution. Walk a few minutes out of town and the Milky Way is a curtain you can’t ignore — perfect for mellow social nights or solo stargazing.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak season (July to December) means more tourists, especially around Brazilian holidays. The village buzzes with energy but also higher prices and packed beaches. Off-season offers solitude but risk of rain and some closed businesses.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry months are prime for wind and kite surfing, with steady winds from July to January. Wet season slows down water sports but brings lush greenery and fewer people—trade-offs for the adventurous.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect accommodation and flights to spike during dry season and holidays. Off-season sees discounts but prepare for limited services and occasional weather headaches.

Pro-tip: Aim for the shoulder months of July or November—dry enough to dodge mud, calm enough to avoid the full tourist stampede, and just right for catching the wind without selling your soul to peak prices.

Overrated spots? Avoid anything too far from the beach. Sure, you might save a few bucks, but you’ll end up spending more on transport and missing out on that sweet, salty air. Plus, who wants to lug their gear around when the ocean is calling?

Stick to the main square or the dunes, and you’ll soak up the essence of Jericoacoara without the hassle.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Jericoacoara Beach is a slice of paradise, but like any good adventure, it comes with its quirks. The swimming conditions here are generally friendly, with gentle waves that invite you in rather than toss you around. Currents can pick up, especially during the afternoon when the wind kicks in, so keep an eye on where the locals are swimming. They know the lay of the land and tend to stick to the calmer spots.

As for marine life, you might spot some rays gliding by, but sharks are more of a myth here than a menace. Jellyfish can pop up occasionally, so a quick scan of the water before diving in is wise.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara Beach is a slice of paradise where the sunsets feel like a personal gift from the universe. You’ll find yourself in awe as the sky explodes with colors while you sip a caipirinha. But let’s be real: getting there is a trek. The roads are bumpy, and the last stretch feels like a rollercoaster ride. Embrace the chaos; it’s part of the charm. Just don’t forget your patience—and maybe some Dramamine.

✈️ When did I visit Brazil?
Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
