Most people only realize on the last day that Tortola Carnival is actually one of the easiest big Caribbean carnivals to navigate on a backpacker budget—shorter distances, cheaper shared taxis, and plenty of free street action if you time it right. It all happens on Tortola, the main island of the British Virgin Islands, centered around Road Town and its surrounding hills. Tortola Carnival (often called the Emancipation Festival) runs for about two weeks, with the heaviest action packed into a few core days of parades, fetes, and late-night food stalls.
