Most people come to Vila do Maio for the beaches, and the long, empty sands of Maio island are the reason to make the trip. What gets overlooked is the pace: Vila do Maio (also called Porto Inglês) is a tiny, sandy-streeted town where a day runs on one café terrace and one fishing pier. It sits on the southwest coast of Maio, in Cabo Verde, a short hop from Praia. Walk the pastel waterfront in the evening, when the fishers land the catch and you get dinner for the price of a chat. Hostels are few, so you meet people at the same two or three tables. Slow travelers and beach walkers will love it. Nightlife seekers won’t.
