Backpacking in Kulen Mountain
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 1, 2026

You have to choose, and it changes the whole day: do you burn your legs hiking up Kulen Mountain, or pay for a vehicle and coast straight to the waterfalls and temples with dry clothes and fresh legs? That decision matters, because Kulen sits about 50 km northeast of Siem Reap in northwest Cambodia, and the climb is where you either earn the mountain or just sample it. The hike itself is short-to-moderate in length but hot, humid, and relentlessly uphill on dusty, sometimes eroded tracks, trading shade and red dirt for glimpses of farmland, jungle, and the plateau edge. Scenery is good rather than mind-blowing; the payoff is the cool plunge pools, riverbed carvings, and hilltop pagodas at the top. Public transport is basically nonexistent, so you’re wrangling a tuk-tuk or private car, and compared with wilder treks in Cardamom or Mondulkiri, Kulen feels tamer, busier, and more about the destination than the journey.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Kulen Mountain

  • Preah Ang Thom (Big Reclining Buddha) — The summit shrine with a huge sandstone reclining Buddha is the spiritual heart of Kulen. Reaching it means a steady uphill through shady forest, and the cool, incense-scented cave with monks and pilgrims feels unlike the temple crowds at Angkor.
  • Kbal Spean (River of a Thousand Lingas) — A short but rocky hike along a stream to a shallow riverbed carved with hundreds of lingas and mythic figures. Seeing sacred carvings literally under the water is a one-of-a-kind archaeological encounter you don’t get on most trails.
  • Phnom Kulen Waterfall — Big cascades and natural pools that are perfect for a post-hike plunge. The trail to the falls drops you into lush jungle and mixes easy scrambling with sections that can be slippery after rain — great payoff

  • Scattered Khmer Ruins and Sandstone Blocks — The plateau is littered with early Angkor-period blocks, lintels and ruined foundations — Kulen is where Jayavarman II declared the Khmer Empire, so you’re literally walking through origin stories. These quiet, half-buried ruins feel more intimate and less restored than the big temples.
  • Forest Wildlife and Ridge Viewpoints — Long-tailed macaques, noisy birds and butterflies are common along the trails, and the ridge viewpoints open up to sweeping views over the plains toward Angkor. Hike early for cooler air, better birdlife and fewer tourists — and keep your pack zipped around the monkeys.

  • Crowds: Peak season means more tourists, especially around December and January holidays. For a quieter trek, aim for November or February when the crowds thin but conditions stay prime.

  • Seasonal Activities: The dry season aligns with local festivals like Pchum Ben (September-October) and Water Festival (November), adding cultural spice if your timing’s right, but these can also mean busier roads and accommodations.

  • Price Fluctuations: Expect higher prices for lodging and tours during peak dry months. Booking ahead can save you from last-minute hikes in cost as demand spikes.

Pro-tip: Start your hike at dawn during the dry season to beat the heat, dodge crowds, and catch the mountain’s first light—nothing beats that moment when the jungle wakes up around you.
