Backpacking in Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island)
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 16, 2026

Everyone arrives at Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) expecting some castaway fantasy; it’s more “sleepy fishing village with hammocks” than postcard-perfection, and that’s actually its charm. Sitting just off Kep on Cambodia’s south coast, it’s a short boat hop from the mainland, which makes it one of the easier islands to reach, but also means you’re never truly alone. The main beach is reasonably clean by Cambodian standards, with mellow, shallow water that’s better for bobbing around than serious swimming or surf. Coral is patchy, so snorkeling is “something to do” rather than a reason to come. Simple bungalows and beach shacks keep costs low and food close, but power and Wi‑Fi are flaky. Compared with Sihanoukville’s overbuilt chaos or the more polished Koh Rong islands, Rabbit Island wins on low-key vibe, loses on wow-factor scenery.

Why Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island) should be on your travel list

Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island, is like that friend who shows up to the party with snacks and a guitar—totally chill and always welcome. The laid-back atmosphere here is infectious. You can kick back in a hammock, sip a coconut, and watch the world drift by.

It’s also affordable. You won’t need to break the bank for a beach chair or a plate of fresh seafood. Plus, the social scene is a delightful mix of fellow backpackers and locals, making it easy to swap stories or share a laugh over a game of cards.

Water access? Absolutely. The clear waters are perfect for a quick dip or a lazy float. But Koh Tonsay isn’t just a place to swim; it’s a connector on your coastal route. It’s where you pause, recharge, and maybe even plot your next adventure. So, if you find yourself in Cambodia, don’t skip this slice of paradise—it’s worth the stop.

  • Beachfront seafood feasts — Small family-run grills on the sand turn up impossibly fresh crab, squid and fish caught that morning. The experience is the show: you pick, they grill over charcoal, you eat with your fingers while waves lap at your feet — simple, loud, and very local. Bring cash and low expectations for table service; that’s part of the charm.
  • Snorkel and explore the rocky outcrops — The island’s shallow, clear water around the rocky headlands hides pockets of reef and schools of little fish that are easy to reach from shore. It’s not a dive-resort spectacle, but up-close and uncrowded — perfect for cheap mask-and-snorkel sessions and spotting curious life without a boat trip.

  • Short hill climb to the island viewpoint — A quick, slightly sweaty walk up a modest path pays off with a wide view over the Gulf and nearby Kep at sunset. It’s the best place to watch colors change, count fishing boats, and get photos that actually look like you were somewhere worth travelling to.
  • Wander the fishing village and shoreline markets — The island’s tiny community is what sets it apart: fishermen mending nets, racks of drying seafood, and simple stalls selling the day’s catch. It’s the real-deal island life; buy directly from the source or just watch routines that have barely changed in years.
  • Low-key night vibes: stargazing and beach fires — There’s no nightclub scene here, just quiet nights where people gather on the sand, bring a small fire or a battery lantern, play guitars, and watch the stars. If you want calm and authenticity after dark, this mellow, barefoot atmosphere is precisely why people come.

  • Topic: Weather – The dry season from November to April is your best bet. Expect clear skies and minimal rain, perfect for beach lounging and snorkeling. The wet season (May to October) brings heavy downpours that can turn your island paradise into a soggy waiting room.

  • Topic: Temperature – Daytime temps hover around 28-33°C (82-91°F) during the dry season, which feels like a warm hug from the sun without the sweat-drenched misery of peak summer. Nights cool down to a comfortable 22-25°C (72-77°F), ideal for beach bonfires or hammock naps.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak season (December to February) means more tourists, but Koh Tonsay still feels chill compared to mainland hotspots. Off-peak months offer near solitude but brace for unpredictable weather.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry season is prime for snorkeling and kayaking. The wet season shuts down most water activities due to rough seas, so plan accordingly.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect higher prices for accommodation and boat rides during the dry season, especially around holidays. The wet season offers bargains but at the cost of less reliable beach time.

Pro-tip: Aim for late November or early April to dodge the crowds and still catch mostly dry weather—your wallet and Instagram feed will thank you.

Avoid the far end of the island if you’re looking for social interaction. It’s quieter there, which is great for a peaceful retreat but not ideal if you want to mingle.

The beach itself is dotted with local eateries serving fresh seafood. Grab a plate of grilled fish and watch the sunset; it’s a ritual that never gets old. Just remember, the Wi-Fi might be spotty, but that’s part of the charm. Embrace the grind; the gold is in the experience.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Koh Tonsay, or Rabbit Island, is a laid-back paradise where the beach vibes are strong and the worries are light. Swimming here is generally safe, with calm waters that invite you in. Just keep an eye on the tides; they can shift, and the currents might surprise you if you wander too far.

Locals know the best spots, so follow their lead. You’ll see them swimming where the water is clear and the waves are gentle. Jellyfish occasionally drift by, but they’re not a common concern.

The sun can be relentless, especially in the afternoon, so slather on that sunscreen and seek shade when you can. Theft isn’t rampant, but don’t leave valuables unattended while you’re off splashing about. Enjoy the simplicity of it all—this beach is about relaxation, not anxiety.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Koh Tonsay is like that friend who shows up late but brings the best snacks. The vibe? Chill, with a side of hammock-swaying bliss. You’ll find locals grilling fresh seafood while you sip a cold beer, and the sunsets? Pure magic. Just a heads-up: the boat ride can be a bit bumpy, so hold on tight. But trust me, the laid-back charm and the chance to disconnect make it all worth it.
