The white sand at Grote Knip is so fine it squeaks underfoot, and the shade is thin, so claim one of the few palm-leaf umbrellas early. The beach is best known for its wide curve of bright turquoise water under dry, tan cliffs. It sits on the west side of Curaçao, a long drive from Willemstad toward Westpunt. The water is clean and clear, and entry is free. Swimming is lovely most days, though waves can push hard when the trade winds turn. Snorkeling along the rocky edges is decent, but it is no reef dive. Food is limited to a small snack stand, so pack a cooler and bring water. Arrive before the tour vans or after they leave, because midday gets crowded. You need a car, as there is no practical bus. This suits sun-and-swim travelers and photographers. It won’t suit anyone wanting nightlife, dorm hostels or a party.
