Backpacking in Avakas Gorge
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 23, 2026

Most blogs sell Avakas Gorge as a neat, family-friendly stroll; in reality, if you push past the first easy kilometer, you’re scrambling over slick boulders, edging along wet rock, and occasionally using your hands like it’s a low-key canyoning route. Avakas sits on the Akamas Peninsula in western Cyprus, north of Paphos and just inland from Lara Beach. The gorge itself is short on paper—roughly 2–4 km one way depending on where you turn around—but it punches above its weight: tight limestone walls, filtered light, fig trees clawing into the rock, and ankle-deep water after rains. It’s moderate rather than hard, but the uneven footing and crowds slow you down. Public transport drops you only as far as Paphos or Peyia, so you’re hitching or paying for a taxi to the trailhead. Compared with nearby coastal trails like the Aphrodite or Adonis routes, Avakas is wilder, narrower, and far more physical per meter.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. The tight slot sections — Narrow stretches where the limestone walls squeeze down to just a few meters apart. Walking through feels properly immersive: echoes, cool shade and that canyon-y claustrophobic thrill you don’t get on wide forest trails.
  2. Towering vertical cliffs — Massive, sheer rock faces rise above you and create dramatic light shafts when the sun hits them. The sense of scale is impressive—perfect for photos and for noticing the layers and weathering patterns in the stone.
  3. Rock pools and seasonal trickles — Small pools, channels and occasional waterfalls collect after rain, carving polished steps and mini-scrambles. They make the hike tactile and changeable; one week it’s dusty, the next it’s full of water and reflections.

  4. Shady microclimate and rare plants — Because the gorge traps moisture and shade, you get ferns, mosses and several plants that stand out against Cyprus’s usual scrub: an unexpectedly green, cool oasis in summer that supports a surprising amount of life.
  5. Karst geology, fossils and cliff wildlife — Look for fossilized shells and layered karst features in the walls that tell an ancient seabed story. Keep an eye (and ears) up for cliff-nesting birds, lizards basking on sunny ledges and the occasional bat in the darker recesses.

  • Temperature: Summer days can spike above 30°C (86°F), turning the gorge into a furnace. Winter dips to around 10°C (50°F), which can make the rocky path slippery and less inviting. Aim for mild temps to keep your energy up and your pace steady.

  • Crowds: Summer draws the biggest crowds, especially July and August, turning the gorge into a busy thoroughfare. Shoulder seasons offer quieter trails, letting you soak in the raw landscape without elbowing through groups.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring brings wildflowers and fresh greenery, adding color and life to the rocky terrain. Autumn offers cooler air and the chance to spot migrating birds, enhancing the natural spectacle beyond just the hike.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local services spike in summer with tourist influx. Booking in spring or autumn often means better rates and more availability, stretching your budget further for gear or a celebratory meal post-hike.

Pro-tip: Hit Avakas Gorge in early autumn—cool air, thinning crowds, and the gorge’s rugged textures sharpened by the season’s light make every step feel earned and every view a prize.
