Backpacking in Artemis Trail
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 9, 2026

Most people only realize after they finish Artemis Trail that it’s basically the best “effort-to-reward ratio” hike in Cyprus: you get big-mountain views without wrecking your legs or your schedule. The loop circles the upper slopes of Mount Olympus in the Troodos Mountains, high enough that summer heat backs off and winter can still bite. It’s an easy-to-moderate 7–8 km circuit, more of a steady march than a sufferfest, with roots and rocks underfoot but nothing technical. You move through cool pine forest, past twisted junipers and exposed viewpoints where the island drops away toward the coast. The downside: public transport to Troodos Square is limited and slow, so it’s far simpler with a car. Compared with the steeper, hotter Caledonia or the shorter Atalanti Trail, Artemis feels like the smart play: lighter on sweat, heavy on scenery, and very beginner-friendly.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Panoramic coastal viewpoints — sheer drops and wide-open Mediterranean vistas you won’t find on most Cyprus forest walks. The trail threads cliff edges and headlands that give uninterrupted sunrise/sunset light and long-sea horizons perfect for lazy pauses or dramatic photos.
  2. Sea caves and limestone formations — carved cliffs, arches and small caves reveal layered limestone and fossil bands. They feel sculpted for exploration and make the trail a geology playground rather than just another dirt path.
  3. Baths of Aphrodite & mythic groves — a tiny freshwater pool and shaded maquis that carry the island’s ancient stories. Even if you’re not into myths, the tranquil setting and cool shade are a lovely cultural detour from the exposed coast.
  4. Spring wildflowers and endemic plants — in season

  5. Lara Bay turtle nesting and coastal wildlife — keep an eye out for signs of loggerhead turtle nesting on nearby beaches and for skittering chameleons and migrating seabirds. That combination of protected wildlife and easy viewing makes the trail feel like a nature reserve on foot.
