Backpacking in Litomyšl
🌟 Highlighttown ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Most people either haven’t heard of Litomyšl or assume it’s just a one-castle photo stop on a bus tour. It’s more interesting than that, and also quieter than the glossy brochures suggest. Litomyšl sits in eastern Czechia, in the Pardubice Region, roughly between Prague and Olomouc, and it works best as a slow, one- or two-night pause on a longer route. The Renaissance chateau and long, pastel main square are genuinely atmospheric, especially in late afternoon when the stone holds the day’s warmth and the cafés smell like coffee and butter. Trains and buses connect easily, the center is fully walkable, and you won’t need local transport. Nights are calm, with a couple of bars and wine spots but no real party scene, and you’re more likely to meet Czech weekenders than a crowd of backpackers. Compared with nearby Litomyšl’s bigger neighbors like Pardubice or Hradec Králové, it’s smaller, prettier, and less practical, better for reading on a bench and catching a concert than for nightlife or big-city errands, and prices sit in that comfortable Czech middle: cheaper than Prague, not dirt-cheap village level.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #10 town in Czechia
What makes it a must-see town

Backpackers flock to Litomyšl for its strategic location along hiking routes and its charming, walkable streets. This town serves as a perfect base for exploring the Surrounding Nature, with trails leading to lush forests and scenic vistas. The local guesthouses and small-scale hostels offer a cozy atmosphere, making it easy to connect with fellow travelers. You’ll find affordable local cuisine that warms you up after a day outdoors, with hearty dishes that reflect Czech culture.

While some pass through quickly, many linger for a few days, soaking in the friendly vibe and relaxed pace. It’s ideal for slow travelers and solo adventurers who appreciate a quieter scene over nightlife. If you’re looking for a place to recharge and share stories, Litomyšl is a welcoming stop on your journey.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Litomyšl

  • Litomyšl Castle (Zámek Litomyšl) — A UNESCO site for a reason: huge Renaissance façade covered in sgraffito, richly furnished interiors and a relaxed castle courtyard. You can wander the rooms, stroll the grounds and really feel the layers of history here.
  • Castle Theatre (Zámecké divadlo) — An 18th-century stage preserved with original machinery and painted scenery. Seeing a performance or taking a guided behind-the-scenes tour is a rare chance to experience a working historic theatre.
  • Smetana’s Birthplace (Dům Bedřicha Smetany) — Small, focused museum in the composer’s actual birth house. Good for music lovers: exhibits, period rooms and a sense of how Smetana’s world grew out of this town.
  • Smetana Square (Smetanovo náměstí) — The town’s lively heart: arcade-lined Renaissance and Baroque

  • Smetana Square (Smetanovo náměstí) — The town’s lively heart: arcade-lined Renaissance and Baroque façades, cafés and street life. Great for people-watching and appreciating the town’s painted house fronts up close.
  • Portmoneum — A tiny, eccentric house-museum with richly painted interiors by Josef Váchal (and collected graphic art). It’s unlike a standard gallery — intimate, quirky and worth a quick, memorable detour.
  • Piarist Church and Monastery — Attractive Baroque church with fine interior decoration; the monastery complex often hosts concerts and exhibitions, so check the program if you like music or architecture.
  • Litomyšl Brewery (Měšťanský pivovar) — Historic town brewery where you can learn a bit about local brewing traditions and, yes, taste some Czech beer. Small, local and a good slice of everyday culture.
  • Zámecký park (Castle Park) — The castle’s English-style park: walking paths, old trees, sculptures and quiet spots. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon, picnic or watching the sunset over the castle.
  • Renaissance and Baroque house façades around town — Not a single building but a cluster of richly decorated houses (sgraffito, frescoes, arcades) that give Litomyšl its unmistakable character; walk the back streets to catch the best details.
  • Smetanova Litomyšl (seasonal music festival) — If you time it right, the town pulses with international opera, concerts and cultural events centered around Smetana’s legacy. Experiencing the festival at the castle courtyard is special — otherwise you’ll still find occasional concerts year-round.
A few excellent day-trip options nearby are Pardubice (castle, old town and gingerbread traditions), Polička (well-preserved medieval walls and a peaceful old centre) and Svojanov Castle; my personal favorite to pair with Litomyšl is Polička for its compact, authentic medieval atmosphere.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Litomyšl’s charm lies in its vibrant Renaissance architecture, where every cobblestone whispers history. Strolling through the town feels like stepping into a living painting. But be ready for the quiet; it’s not a nightlife hotspot. Embrace the slower pace, and you’ll find the beauty in the stillness. Just don’t expect a bustling bar scene after dark.
