Backpacking in Podyjí
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 9, 2026

A lot of people assume Podyjí National Park is just a tiny side-trip from Znojmo with one viewpoint and done; that’s wrong, and it’s exactly how you miss its best sections. The park hugs the Dyje River along the Austrian border in South Moravia, wrapping around Znojmo and stretching east–west in a long, narrow strip. For backpackers, it’s a low-key, low-drama park: no huge peaks, but a deep river valley, vineyards on the edges, oak forests, and quiet trails where you actually hear birds instead of Bluetooth speakers. Hiking is mostly moderate, with some short, steep climbs to viewpoints; wildlife is there if you’re patient, not if you’re loud. Access from Znojmo is easy by bus or on foot, there’s no entrance fee, and crowds stay manageable except on sunny weekends near the main lookouts. Wild camping is banned and rangers do check, so you’re relying on campsites and pensions in nearby villages, which keeps costs reasonable but kills the “sleep wherever” fantasy. Compared with Bohemian Switzerland or Krkonoše, Podyjí feels more intimate and less dramatic: fewer Instagram cliffs, more slow-burn river bends and wine-country evenings after your hike.

  • Dyje River gorge and meanders — The park’s signature: a narrow, intimate river valley carved into sandstone with tight bends, steep banks and mirror-like water at low wind. Great for photos, peaceful riverside stretches and feeling properly tucked into nature. (Personal favorite — I like catching the golden light on the bends near sunrise.)
  • Vranov nad Dyjí reservoir and Vranov Castle — A dramatic combo of water and stone: the wide reservoir below a hilltop baroque castle makes for classic panorama shots, easy picnics and short promenades. The area is the most accessible part of the park, so it’s handy if you want big views with minimal scrambling.

  • South-facing steppe slopes — These warm, dry patches on the valley sides host rare grasses, orchids and a bright array of butterflies. They feel almost Mediterranean compared with the shaded forest below and are best late spring to early summer when flowers and insects peak.
  • Old mixed beech-oak forests — Deep, cool woodland with layered undergrowth, mossy rocks and plenty of fungus in autumn. These stretches are where the park’s quieter wildlife hangs out and where trails feel like proper backcountry rather than a tourist promenade.
  • Birdwatching and wildlife spotting — Podyjí punches above its size for birds of prey, woodpeckers and migratory species; you’ll also see deer, wild boar sign and smaller mammals. Dawn and dusk are the best bets; bring binoculars and be patient.
  • Ridge viewpoints and hiking trail network — Compact but varied: a network of well-marked trails links high viewpoints along the border ridge, offering continuous panorama hiking from Znojmo toward Vranov. You can do short loops or string together a full day’s route with steep ups and rewarding vistas.
  • Scattered castle ruins and historic villages — Small ruins and traditional villages dot the edges of the park, giving a human layer to the wild scenery. They make good rest stops and add a bit of history to a hike without too many crowds.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local services spike in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you 20-30% while still enjoying full access to the park’s offerings.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October to dodge crowds and extreme weather, keeping your energy and budget intact for the trails that truly matter.

Another option is the village of Vranov nad Dyjí, just outside the park. It’s picturesque and has a few charming pensions. Staying here gives you easy access to the park while allowing you to enjoy local dining options.

Avoid the tourist traps in Znojmo’s center. They can drain your budget without offering much in return. Focus on places that let you recharge for the adventures ahead.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on exploring Podyjí

Podyjí National Park offers a rare blend of serene landscapes and rich biodiversity. The trails wind through lush forests and along the Dyje River, making every step a chance to connect with nature. However, be prepared for limited amenities. This isn’t a place for luxury; it’s about the experience. Bring your own supplies and plan for fewer services. Embrace the simplicity, and you’ll find the park’s true charm.
