Backpacking in Salla
👀 For curious travelerstown ranked #26
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Most people online sell Salla as “middle of nowhere,” but for a backpacker it’s more like a quiet junction where reindeer trails, ski tracks, and old war history cross. Salla sits in eastern Lapland, close to the Russian border, north of Kuusamo and far calmer than Rovaniemi. It works best as a base for forests, fells, and the national park rather than as a town trip: the center is small, functional, and sleepy, with a supermarket, a couple of bars, and that’s about the nightlife. Buses are infrequent but workable if you plan around them; once you’re there, you mostly walk or rely on rides from guesthouses or activity operators. It’s safe, not cheap but less punishing than big Lapland resorts, and you’ll meet more Finns on ski holidays or hikers than classic hostel-hopping backpackers, which makes it great if you want quiet trails and long, blue-tinted winter evenings instead of bar crawls.

The light here shifts dramatically with the seasons, rewarding patience with long, golden evenings or the surreal glow of the Northern Lights.

  • Local Bus: Runs mainly during daylight hours, roughly 7 AM to 6 PM, with infrequent service on weekends. Tickets are affordable, around €3-5, but expect a slow, scenic ride that’s more about connecting small communities than speed.
  • Taxi: Available but pricey compared to other options, taxis are best reserved for early mornings or late evenings when buses aren’t running. Booking ahead is wise, as spontaneous hails are rare.
  • Bicycle Rental: Seasonal and weather-dependent, renting a bike offers a faster, more flexible way to cover the town and nearby trails. The crisp air and open roads make this a refreshing choice when the sun is out.
  • Car Rental: For those venturing beyond Salla’s limits, renting a car is the only way to access remote wilderness areas on your own schedule. Roads can be icy in winter, so experience with winter driving is essential.

👛 Costs (as of 16 October 2026)What things cost and how to budget

Backpacking in Salla, Finland, means embracing a quiet, snow-dusted wilderness where every euro counts, and the rhythm of your day is set by nature and simple comforts.
  • Dorm Accommodation: Expect to pay around €30-€50 per night for a bed in a hostel dorm. Options are limited, so booking ahead is smart, especially in winter when the Northern Lights draw crowds. The lodgings are basic but warm, often with that clean pine scent and a wood stove crackling somewhere nearby.
  • Meals: Food here leans on hearty, local staples. Budget about €10-€15 for a simple meal at a café or small restaurant—think reindeer stew or salmon soup. Groceries for self-catering can be cheaper, around €5-€8 per day if you stick to basics like bread, cheese, and fresh berries from local markets.

  • Local Transport: Public transport is sparse. A single bus ride might cost €3-€5, but many travelers rely on hitchhiking or renting a bike in summer. Renting a car is the smoother option but adds €50+ per day. Walking is often the best way to soak in the crisp air and quiet streets.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Many outdoor activities like hiking or snowshoeing are free, but expect to pay €10-€20 for equipment rental or guided tours, especially for snowmobiling or visiting the national park visitor centers. The Northern Lights tours can push €50+, but they’re worth every cent if you want a guided experience.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Budget around €5-€10 for extras like a coffee, a local craft souvenir, or emergency supplies. Wi-Fi can be patchy, so a local SIM card with data costs about €15 for a week, a small but useful investment.

Altogether, you’re looking at roughly €60-€100 per day to cover the essentials without skimping on comfort or experience. Salla’s charm isn’t flashy—it’s in the crisp air, the quiet trails, and the slow pace. Spending a little more on warmth and local food pays off in feeling truly part of this Arctic edge.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Salla, Finland, is generally safe, but a few practical tips can enhance your experience. Stay aware in busier areas, especially near the market square, where distractions can occur.
