Montagne des Singes is a short, easy forest walk, and the hill is not a primate refuge where monkeys wait on the path; the name is old, and sightings are a bonus rather than a promise. It sits in the north of French Guiana, in the commune of Kourou, a short drive from the town. Expect a shaded loop of roughly 1 to 2 hours, with root-tangled steps, wet red clay, the hum of cicadas and the odd howler monkey call carrying through the canopy. The summit view over the coastal forest and the sea is the draw. Public transport to the trailhead is thin, so a rental car, taxi or a lift is the practical way; budget for a taxi fare of about €15 to 30 each way and arrange the pickup in advance, or you will wait. Start early, bring 1.5 liters of water and mosquito repellent, and wear shoes with grip. Families and casual walkers will enjoy it most; peak-baggers wanting a challenge will not.

The Montagne des Singes Trail is short, well-marked and manageable for most hikers, and the main issues are heat, humidity and slippery ground. Go early, carry at least 2 liters of water, and wear shoes with real grip, because wet roots and clay get slick after rain. Stay on the marked path, as the surrounding forest is dense and easy to get turned around in. Capuchin and howler monkeys live here, and you should watch them from a distance and never feed them. Snakes and large spiders exist but rarely cause trouble if you watch where you step and keep hands off branches and trunks. Mosquitoes are constant, so bring repellent and cover your arms and legs at dusk. Mobile signal can be patchy, so tell your lodging where you are going. Skip the trail during or just after a heavy storm.
