Here’s the thing nobody tells you about Batokunku Beach: you can actually hear yourself think. Most travelers only realize this after they’ve already elbowed through the crowds at Kololi or Senegambia, then stumble south and find Batokunku’s sand—just a few kilometers down the coast from Tanji, on The Gambia’s Atlantic edge—almost suspiciously empty. It’s not spotless (expect the odd plastic bottle, courtesy of the Atlantic), but it’s cleaner than most, and the lack of touts is a minor miracle.
