Backpacking in Mediterranean Steps
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 30, 2026

Your first real decision on the Mediterranean Steps is simple but brutal: do you grind up the route and earn every meter of elevation, or cheat a little by taking the cable car or a taxi to the top of the Rock and walk it down? It matters, because this path clings to the eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, starting near Jew’s Gate on the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and dropping (or climbing) through raw limestone, old military tunnels, and exposed staircases that punish weak legs. The payoff is huge: wide-open views over the Strait, Morocco floating on the horizon, and sheer cliffs dropping to the sea. It’s short but steep, hotter and rougher than the gentler paths around the summit or the town-side trails, yet still reachable by bus plus a short uphill walk. Compared to other Gibraltar hikes, this is the sharp, spicy one.

  1. Strait & Africa viewpoint — One of the few short hikes where you can actually see another continent from the trail: sweeping views over the Bay, the busy shipping lanes and the Moroccan coast on clear days. The angle on the sea and the changing light at sunrise/sunset make it far more dramatic than a roadside lookout.
  2. Barbary macaques — Gibraltar’s famous free-roaming monkeys often patrol the Steps, so expect close-up, cheeky encounters you won’t get on a regular woodland trail. They add unpredictable wildlife moments and great photo ops, especially when they sun themselves on the rocks above the sea.

  3. Raptor and migratory bird watching — The Rock sits on a major migration bottleneck, so the Mediterranean Steps gives you clear sightlines to watch kites, eagles and passerines riding the thermals across the Strait. It’s a compact trail where bird movement is vivid and easy to follow without climbing a summit.
  4. Military archaeology & old gun positions — Scattered along the route are weathered emplacements, bolted anchors and carved steps from Victorian and WWII eras, blending into the limestone. That mix of raw nature and human history—rusty metal against sheer sea cliffs—gives the walk a rugged, lived-in feel you don’t get on purely scenic trails.
  5. Limestone cliffs, caves and coastal flora — The path threads jagged limestone escarpments, tiny sea caves and pockets of Mediterranean scrub, with orchids and aromatic herbs in season. The geology is exposed and dramatic, so you get cliff-edge geology, coastal scents and microhabitats in a short, intense stretch of trail.

  • Crowds: Peak summer draws tourists in droves, clogging the narrow steps and muting the wild vibe. Shoulder seasons—April to June and September to October—offer solitude and a more authentic grind.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring and autumn bring local festivals and wildlife activity, adding layers to your trek beyond just the climb. Summer’s heat limits side adventures, and winter’s quietness can feel isolating.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and flights spike in summer. Shoulder seasons offer better deals, letting you stretch your budget without sacrificing experience.

Pro-tip: Aim for late April or early October—cool air, fewer crowds, and the trail’s raw character at its sharpest.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

The Mediterranean Steps are a workout wrapped in breathtaking views. As you climb, the salty breeze hits your face, and the sound of waves crashing below fuels your determination. The best surprise? Spotting a wild monkey casually lounging on a rock—just don’t get too close. Bring plenty of water; the sun can be relentless. When you finally reach the top, the panorama of the coast is a reward that makes every step worth it. Trust me, that first cold beer afterward tastes like victory.
