Backpacking in Anse La Roche Beach
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Go on a weekday morning and you may have the whole bay to yourself, which is the best reason to make the effort. Anse La Roche Beach sits on the northwest coast of Carriacou, the small island that belongs to Grenada. There is no road to the sand. You walk in on a short, mostly shaded trail, and that keeps the crowds thin and the beach clean. The water is clear and calm enough for easy swimming, and snorkeling along the rocky edges is worth your mask. Surf is not the draw. Skip it if you want cocktails, loungers or a menu, since services are minimal and you should carry your own food and water. The sand is pale and soft, and the bay is backed by dry scrub and sea grape.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #6 beach in Grenada
Reasons people choose to visit here

Anse La Roche Beach earns its stop because the walk in filters out almost everyone who wants a roadside beach bar. What remains is a quiet crescent where backpackers on Carriacou’s northwest coast can spend an entire afternoon without hearing an engine. The trail itself is part of the draw, a short hike from the village of Bogles that feels like a small expedition without needing boots or a guide. It also gives you a free, easy day on an island where beds and meals add up. The bay is wide, the water settles flat on most days, and it is easy to meet the few other travelers who made the same effort. Pack a picnic and a book, and you have a cheap, restful day that suits slow island hopping.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. The trail from Bayaram: The only way in on foot is a short, rough path through dry coastal scrub, with glimpses of the sea opening up before the sand appears. Wear closed shoes and start before the heat builds.
  2. Swimming in the bay: The water is clear and usually gentle, with a sandy bottom that slopes in gradually. It is a good place for a long, unhurried swim without waves knocking you about.
  3. Snorkeling the rocky edges: The rocks at the sides of the bay shelter small reef fish and give you something to look at close to shore. Bring your own mask, since there is no gear hire on the sand.
  4. Picnic on the sand: With nothing for sale, the beach is made for a packed lunch in the shade of the sea grape and scrub. Bring plenty of water and carry all your trash back out.
  5. Sunset from the west-facing shore:

  5. Sunset from the west-facing shore: The bay faces the Caribbean side, so the sky colors over open water in the evening. Leave the beach with enough daylight left to walk the trail back comfortably.
Anse La Roche Beach rewards a full day that pairs the trail walk in with an afternoon of snorkeling along the rocks.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Dry Season (January to May): Expect mostly sunny days at 24 to 31°C (75 to 88°F) and calm, clear water. This is the best window for snorkeling and for the walk in from Bogles. Daylight runs about 11 to 12 hours.
  • Wet Season (June to November): Showers are short and heavy, and highs sit around 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F). The trail from Bogles can turn muddy, and the water can cloud after storms. Hurricane risk is low on Carriacou but not zero, peaking August to October.
  • Peak Crowds (December to April): Yachts fill the anchorage and Carriacou's guesthouses book up. Prices rise noticeably around Christmas and Carnival.
  • Shoulder Months (May, early December): Fewer people, lower rates, and usually decent weather.
  • Time of Day: Mornings are quietest and coolest.
Arrive before 10 a.m. for empty sand and soft light.

🛏️ Where to stay?Choosing the right base

Hillsborough is the practical base for Anse La Roche, and it sits a short drive away plus a walk of about 40 minutes, or a short boat ride. Guesthouses and small rooms here run about US$50 to 110 a night, with a few simple options at the low end. You get the island's main supermarkets, bakeries, ferry dock, bars and taxis, which makes it the easiest place to meet other travelers and arrange rides.

The north around Bogles puts you closer to the trailhead. Stays here are quieter, mostly small cottages and apartments at roughly US$70 to 130, and you will want a rented car or a pre-arranged driver. … read more 👉

It suits anyone who wants early starts and empty beaches before day boats arrive.

Hillsborough has more social energy, while the north has the better pre-breakfast access to the sand. Solo travelers will find it easier to connect in town, where meals, rum shops and dive operators cluster along the waterfront. Book ahead from December to April, when the small number of rooms on Carriacou fills with sailors and visitors.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Anse La Roche is a calm, sheltered bay where most visitors swim without trouble. The water is typically flat and clear, with little current inside the cove, though it can pick up on windier days or after storms. Snorkelers may see reef fish and the occasional ray, and they should watch for sea urchins on rocky edges.

The sun is the real hazard. Shade is limited and midday heat is strong, so bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water, as there are no services on the sand. The trail can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with grip. The beach is remote and rarely crowded, and theft is uncommon, but keep valuables with you rather than leaving them unattended while you swim.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Most travelers reach Anse La Roche Beach by taking a taxi or rental car from Hillsborough to Bogles in the north, then walking about 40 minutes on a dirt road and a forest path. Boat transfers from Hillsborough or Tyrrel Bay are also possible for roughly US$50 to 150 per group. Carriacou itself is reached by ferry from Grenada's mainland, about 1.5 to 2 hours from St. George's.
Anse La Roche Beach is excellent for swimming and snorkeling thanks to its sheltered, clear, shallow water. Surfing is not an option because waves are minimal. Snorkeling is best in the morning on the reef edges, so bring your own gear since rentals on the sand are not guaranteed, and dive shops in Hillsborough rent masks and fins for around US$10 to 20.
Anse La Roche Beach is free to visit, with no entry fee or gate. Your only costs are getting there, such as a taxi of about US$20 to 40 each way from Hillsborough, or a boat if you prefer. Bring food and water, as there are no shops on the sand.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Anse La Roche Beach

Anse La Roche Beach has no shop, no bar and no shade you can rent, and that is the whole point. First-timers often arrive with a single bottle of water and regret it by noon. I would bring double what seems sensible, plus snacks and a mask, and leave before dusk so the trail back stays easy.
