Backpacking in Gun Beach
🏆 Top pickbeach ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 9, 2026

The thing nobody tells you about Gun Beach is that it’s basically the “back door” to Tumon’s postcard water without Tumon’s resort chaos, and you only realize that after you’ve already wasted two days on the main strip. Tucked at the northern end of Tumon Bay on Guam’s west coast, it’s close enough to walk from the big hotels, yet just far enough that the lazier tourists tap out. For backpackers, it’s a solid value call: clearer water than central Tumon, decent snorkeling around the reef and by the old gun, and a low-key, slightly scruffy vibe that feels more beach hangout than curated resort. It’s not spotless—expect some litter in the treeline—and it can get busy when beach bars crank up. Swimming is good but watch currents near the reef gap. Compared with Ypao or Matapang, Gun feels rougher, cheaper, and better for a quick dip-and-beer combo than a full beach day.

What sets this place apart

Gun Beach in Guam is one of those spots that backpackers can’t help but stop at, and for good reason. First off, the laid-back atmosphere is like a warm hug after a long trek. You can kick off your shoes, sink your toes into the sand, and let the ocean breeze remind you that life doesn’t always have to be a race.

Then there’s the affordability factor. You won’t need to sell a kidney to grab a cold drink or a bite to eat. Plus, the social scene is a delightful mix of locals and fellow travelers, making it easy to swap stories or join a spontaneous beach volleyball game.

But let’s not forget the water access. The clear, inviting waters are perfect for a quick dip or a lazy float. Gun Beach isn’t just a place to swim; it’s a connector along the coastal route, a perfect pause to recharge before … read more 👉

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Gun Beach

  1. Snorkel the pocket reef just off shore — a shallow reef lies only a short swim from the sand, so you don’t need a boat to see colorful reef fish and the occasional sea turtle; the cove’s shape often keeps the water calm, making it friendly for snorkelers who aren’t expert swimmers.
  2. Photograph the dramatic rocky outcrop and cliffs — a jagged rock formation and low limestone cliffs frame the beach and create striking foregrounds for photos, especially when the light slants in late afternoon; it’s one of those local compositions you won’t find on the bigger, flatter resort beaches.
  3. Pick over tide pools and small shoreline caves — at lower tides the rocky edge reveals tiny ecosystems: crabs, blennies, colorful algae and other little creatures you can watch without disturbing a big reef; great

  4. Short cliffside trail and lookout — a quick, slightly rugged path up from the sand leads to a lookout that gives a different perspective of Tumon Bay and the nearby coast; it’s an easy mini-hike that rewards you with better light for photos and fewer people than the main beaches.
  5. Moonlit walks and quiet stargazing — nightlife here isn’t clubs and neon but calm evenings: go for a moonlit stroll along the water or lie back and watch the stars where the lights are lower than in downtown Tumon; just be mindful of tides and go with someone after dark.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Topic: Weather – Guam’s tropical climate means it’s warm year-round, but the dry season from January to May is your best bet. Expect less rain and fewer sudden downpours, which is a blessing when you’re lugging a backpack and not a beach umbrella.

  • Topic: Temperature – Temperatures hover between 24°C and 31°C (75°F to 88°F). The dry season tends to be a touch cooler and more comfortable, while the wet season can feel like a sauna with humidity cranked up to eleven.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours – Daylight is pretty consistent, about 12 hours year-round. Sunrise around 6 AM, sunset close to 6 PM, so you get a solid chunk of daylight to chase waves or explore without worrying about early darkness.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak tourist season overlaps with the dry months, especially around spring break

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak tourist season overlaps with the dry months, especially around spring break and holidays. Gun Beach can get busy, but it’s nothing like the madness of Waikiki. Still, if you want some elbow room, aim for the shoulder months of January or May.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry season brings better snorkeling and diving conditions, with clearer water and calmer seas. The wet season’s rougher waters can put a damper on underwater adventures, so plan accordingly.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Prices for accommodation and flights spike during the dry season’s peak, especially around March and April. If you’re backpacking on a budget, booking early or targeting the shoulder months can save you a few bucks without sacrificing much.

Pro-tip: Visit Gun Beach in the dry season’s shoulder months—January or May—for the sweet spot of good weather, manageable crowds, and friendlier prices.

If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the local markets. They’re a treasure trove of snacks and souvenirs, and you might even score a few tips from locals on the best hidden spots.

Safety isn’t a huge concern here, but keep your wits about you, especially after sunset. The beach is stunning, but the real magic happens when you connect with others who share your love for travel. Embrace the grind; the gold is in the friendships you’ll forge along the way.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Gun Beach

Gun Beach in Guam is a laid-back paradise, but like any good adventure, it comes with its quirks. The swimming conditions are generally friendly, though you might encounter some playful waves and the occasional current. Keep an eye on the flags; they’re not just for decoration. Locals know when to dive in and when to stay out, so follow their lead.

As for marine life, you might spot a ray gliding by or a curious fish, but don’t worry—sharks are more interested in their own business. Just watch your step near the reef; it can be sharp and unforgiving.

Weather-wise, the sun can be relentless, especially midday. Slather on that sunscreen and consider a hat. Theft isn’t rampant, but keep your valuables close. Enjoy the beach, soak in the sun, and remember: the grind is part of the gold.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Gun Beach is a mixed bag, but if you’re in the mood for a slice of local life, it’s worth the trek. The vibe? Laid-back with a hint of adventure. You’ll find a few beach bars serving up cold drinks and the occasional karaoke session—yes, it’s as glorious as it sounds. The surprise? Those WWII relics scattered around; they add a layer of history that’s surprisingly captivating. Just a heads-up: parking can be a hassle, so arrive early or brace for a stroll.
