That evening, we decided to finish Christmas Eve in style with lots of beer and beer pong (oh, and a quick fried chicken as a Christmas meal). When the first beer popped open, the hostel owner quickly closed all the curtains. She explained that except for 5-star hotels, no one in this city had an alcohol license because it had become unaffordable.

The dim fluorescent light made beer pong even more challenging. Just as the second ping-pong ball was about to catch up with the first, the owner came rushing up with wide eyes. “Police,” she gasped, “all the beer must go.” I quite enjoy a challenge, but to chug the entire beer supply in 30 seconds seemed a bit much. Fortunately, we quickly found some empty lockers where we could hide all the beer. Later, the owner explained that sometimes the neighbors would call the police if the curtains closed suspiciously early.
