Backpacking in Chembra Peak Trek
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

You only realize too late that Chembra Peak is one of the few “big view” treks in South India you can crush in half a day and still be back in town for dinner. Sitting in Wayanad, northern Kerala, it’s a steep, sweaty climb past tea estates and a heart-shaped lake to a ridge that feels far higher than it is. The trail is short but punchy, hot, and often crowded, yet buses and jeeps from Kalpetta make the trailhead easy. Compared to longer Western Ghats routes like Kudremukh, Chembra is more controlled, less wild, but delivers faster payoff for the effort.
