Backpacking in Kheerganga
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Your boots squelch in cold mud, pine needles stick to your calves, and somewhere below the clouds you hear the hiss of a hot spring cutting through the chill. That’s Kheerganga, high above Parvati Valley in Himachal Pradesh, North India. It’s a half-day climb from Barshaini, easy to reach by bus from Bhuntar, but the trail is steeper and more eroded than the Instagram crowd admits. Waterfalls, forest, and wide valley views reward the grind, though it feels busier and less wild than nearby treks like Tosh or Grahan.

What makes this hike worth hiking

Kheerganga pulls backpackers in like a magnet, and for good reason. The scenery-to-effort ratio is off the charts. You’ll trek through lush forests, cross gushing streams, and finally reach a hot spring that feels like a warm hug after a day of sweat and grit.

Getting there is a breeze. Public transport access is solid, with buses and shared taxis zipping you to the trailhead from nearby towns like Kasol. It’s a low-cost adventure, too; you can stretch your budget while soaking in jaw-dropping views.

The hike offers flexible distances—you can take it slow or push yourself, making it perfect for any skill level. Plus, it fits seamlessly into a longer backpacking route through the Parvati Valley.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Hot Water Springs at Kheerganga — A natural, steaming pool right at the campsite where locals and trekkers soak together; the water feels heavenly after the uphill slog and carries local legends about “kheer” (milk pudding) being cooked here by the gods. (Personal favorite: nothing beats a sunset soak with mountain air and tired legs.)
  2. Ridge Viewpoint over Parvati Valley — A sharp, panoramic edge where the valley opens into sweeping views of terraced slopes and distant snow-capped peaks; light in the morning and at dusk turns the whole valley cinematic, way more dramatic than many forest-only treks.
  3. High Alpine Meadows and Campsites — Wide grassy clearings above the tree line that host tent clusters and wildflowers in summer, perfect for big skies, epic sunsets and an unobstructed view

  4. Rudra Nag Temple and Local Culture — A small Shiva shrine near the top with incense, simple rituals and friendly pilgrims; the mix of Himalayan spirituality, shepherds and campsite chatter gives the place a lived-in, authentic vibe you won’t get on purely commercial treks.
  5. Forest Trails, Waterfalls and Natural Pools en route — The approach winds through pine forests, cliffside paths and a few small cascades and pools where you can pause, cool off and snap photos; the variety (river, woods, waterfalls) keeps the hike interesting every kilometer.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring blooms and autumn foliage add color to the trek. Winter snowscapes are breathtaking but demand serious gear and experience.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guides hike prices during peak months. Off-season sees discounts but fewer services and harsher conditions.

Pro-tip: Start early in the morning during shoulder seasons to beat crowds and catch the trail bathed in golden light—nothing like that first step with the sun warming your back.
