Burwood Beach is a working fishing beach, and the canoes that land here sell their catch straight off the sand. It sits on the north coast of Jamaica, in Trelawny, just outside Falmouth. The shared taxi from town let me off at a dusty turnoff, and the driver pointed me toward a fisherman scaling snapper on an upturned boat. That was lunch sorted. The sand is narrow and patchy, the water is fine for a dip but not for serious snorkeling, and there is no resort polish. Skip it for a full beach day. Go for the fish, the local company and the quiet. Bring cash.

Burwood Beach works as a pause between bigger north coast stops, and it gives you something the resort strips can’t: a look at everyday Jamaican life. The fishing canoes pulled onto the sand mean fish is cheap and fresh, and the vendors who fry it are happy to talk. Weekends fill with Trelawny families, music and domino slaps, so you will meet locals rather than other backpackers. The beach also sits close to Falmouth’s Georgian streets, so you can base a night or two nearby and mix history with sea time. Come for an unhurried afternoon, not for nightlife or dive shops.

  • Dry Season (December to April): Skies stay mostly clear, with highs of 29 to 31°C (84 to 88°F) and calmer seas. Daylight runs roughly 11 to 12 hours. Prices for rooms and rides peak, mainly around Christmas.
  • Hurricane Season (June to November): Expect hot, humid days of 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), with afternoon downpours and the heaviest rain in September and October. Seas can turn rough. Rooms drop in price.
  • Weekends and Holidays: Locals from Trelawny and Falmouth fill the sand on Sundays and public holidays. Weekdays are quiet.
Go on a weekday morning in February or March for flat water and an empty beach.

Burwood Beach is a local-use beach, and the main hazard is the sea itself. Waves can build when winter northers or tropical systems pass, so read the water before you wade in, and skip it if surf is breaking hard. On calm days, swimming is easy. Shade is limited, so bring sunscreen, a hat and water, as the midday sun is fierce. Few facilities exist, so carry what you need. Keep phones and cash out of sight, leave valuables at your lodging, and avoid walking the beach alone after dark. Locals are usually friendly and happy to point out the better swimming spots.

Burwood Beach sits on the Trelawny coast just outside Falmouth, a 5 to 10 minute taxi ride that costs roughly US$5 to 10. Buses and shared route taxis from Montego Bay (about 45 minutes to an hour) run to Falmouth for around US$2 to 4. From Falmouth, ask a driver to take you to the beach and arrange a pickup time.
Burwood Beach is best for a paddle and a relaxed dip on calm days, mostly from December to April. Surf can rise when northern swells arrive, and the shoreline is not set up for surfing or organized snorkeling. Bring your own mask if you want to look around, and stay in water you can easily stand in.
Burwood Beach is generally free to enter, since it works as a public local beach with no gate fee. Expect to spend only on your taxi, around US$5 to 10 each way from Falmouth, plus food and drink, since facilities are minimal. Bring water and snacks, and carry small bills for any informal vendors or drivers.
