This working market town sits in Clarendon, in the south of Jamaica, at the junction of the main highways. Skip the center for sightseeing: it is traffic, taxis and concrete. Come for the Saturday market, honest food and the access it gives to rural Clarendon. Evenings are quiet and there are few other backpackers. Practical travelers and food-minded people will like it most. Anyone wanting beaches or nightlife will not.

  • May to June and September to November: Rainy periods with afternoon downpours, humidity and highs up to 33°C (91°F). Hurricane risk peaks from August to October, and deals are common.
  • July to August: Hot and drier, with long daylight and busy local travel around Emancipation and Independence celebrations.
Visit midweek, because market day is liveliest and traffic eases.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Stay in or near the town center if you need an easy late arrival, since May Pen has few hostels and most budget beds are small guesthouses and basic hotels. Rooms cost about US$35 to 70 a night, and the center keeps you close to the transport center, ATMs and food. It is noisy with traffic and music until late, so bring earplugs. Streets are quieter on the residential edges, but you will need a taxi after dark. Many backpackers instead sleep in Kingston or Mandeville, which have more dorms and nightlife, and treat May Pen as a stop. Book ahead on holiday weekends.
