Montego Bay Marine Park has no gate, no ticket booth and no trail map, because it is water, not land. It was Jamaica’s first protected marine area, and you enter it from ordinary public beaches. The park lies along the coast of Montego Bay in the north of Jamaica, and the city sits on its doorstep. Skip the glass-bottom boat touts on the main strip. They sell the same reef view that a cheap mask gives you from shore at the Hip Strip, and they sell it at triple the price. Better to hire a licensed operator for the mangrove lagoon and outer reef. A driver told me, “Ask for the Trust-registered boats, man, the others just anchor on the coral.” I follow that advice. Hiking is nil, crowds peak on cruise days, and the water near the port is not the cleanest. Snorkelers on a tight schedule will like it most. Hikers will not.
