- Tidal sand-plain walks — The bay has a massive tidal swing, which peels back a long, firm sand shelf at low tide. Day: you can walk way out from shore across wide flats, hunt for little shells and get a real sense of the sea retreating. Night: low-tide moonlit walks are magical — but don’t be a hero; check tide times and stick to well-known routes so you’re not stranded by the returning water.
- Rock pools and shoreline wildlife — Between the sand and the rocky edges you’ll find lively little ecosystems. Day: kids and grown-ups both get a kick from finger-sized crabs, anemones and tiny fish in sheltered pools; it’s a great spot for casual tide-pooling and amateur marine photography. Night: not much action after dark unless you’re doing guided night foraging—otherwise keep to daytime exploring.

- Flat-water paddling and easy watersports — The bay’s sheltered curve keeps conditions friendlier than open ocean. Day: stand-up paddleboarding and leisure kayaking are ideal here — calm launches, sweeping views of the harbour and plenty of places to beach. Night: twilight paddles look amazing with harbour lights, but only for experienced paddlers with lights and a floatation device.
- Local sailing & harbour atmosphere — This isn’t just a pretty beach; it’s a working maritime place with a strong small-boat culture. Day: you’ll see dinghies, classic boats and local sailors practicing — a good spot to watch races or learn the ropes from instructors. Night: the quayside lights reflecting on calm water create a mellow evening scene — lively without being nightclub loud.
- Sunsets, skyline views and photography — The bay’s wide arc gives you dramatic angles as the sun drops. Day: late afternoon light is perfect for long, empty-beach walks and skyline shots of the nearby tidal island/castle silhouette. Night: after dark the harbour lights make for long-exposure photos and peaceful promenade walks — bring a jacket and a headlamp if you plan to linger.
