Backpacking in Kitesurf Beach
👌 Worth visitingbeach ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Everyone shows up at Kitesurf Beach expecting some wild Red Sea Ibiza; it’s not. This little strip just south of Aqaba, near the Saudi border, is basically Jordan’s windy backyard for people who like being dragged across water by a kite and calling it fun. For backpackers, it’s a solid stop, not a life-altering one. The wind is great for kitesurfing, decent for regular windsurf, and mildly annoying if you just wanted a lazy swim, since the chop and occasional jellyfish make it more “refreshing struggle” than “floaty bliss.” It’s cleaner and calmer than Aqaba’s city beaches, with fewer families, more salty expats, and a low-key, gear-head vibe. Budget camps and hostels sit right behind the sand, plus cheap shawarma and falafel stands, but if you’re here to snorkel or dive, nearby South Beach has better reefs and more color for the same effort.

Ranked #4 beach in Jordan
What makes it a must-see beach

Kitesurf Beach in Jordan is one of those spots that backpackers actually stop at, and for good reason. First off, the laid-back atmosphere is a breath of fresh air. You can kick back on the sand, sip a cold drink, and watch the kitesurfers dance across the waves like they’re auditioning for a reality show.

Then there’s the affordability factor. You won’t need to sell a kidney to enjoy a day here. Food stalls serve up tasty bites that won’t break the bank, and the beach itself is free.

The social scene is another draw. You’ll find fellow travelers swapping stories, sharing laughs, and maybe even planning the next leg of their journey. It’s a great place to connect, especially when you’re all in the same boat—literally.

Plus, Kitesurf Beach serves as a connector along the coastal route. It’s not just a place to swim; it’s a pause button on your adventure, a chance to recharge before diving back into the grind. So, if you’re in the area, don’t skip it. Embrace the absurdity of travel and enjoy the ride!

  • Flat-water beginner lagoon sessions — A shallow, protected stretch right off the sand makes this place a learning machine: waist-deep water, steady thermal winds and relatively small chop mean you’ll progress fast without swallowing half the Red Sea. Bring booties and a rash vest; lessons are common so you can get coached without wasting days practicing the same mistake.
  • Side-onshore freeride and jump runs — When the wind builds in the afternoon it funnels along the coast and between the nearby mountains, giving consistent side-onshore power perfect for freeride carving and boosted jumps. Unlike open-ocean spots with unpredictable swells, this spot gives predictable gusts that let you push tricks or just enjoy long, fast runs.

  • Shore-access coral and snorkeling right off the beach — One of the best non-kite things here: clear water and fringing reef you can reach without a boat. It’s great for quick mask-and-fins sessions between wind windows — colorful coral and reef fish close to shore make it a unique combo with a kitesurf day. Use reef-safe sunscreen and watch your entry points.
  • Golden-hour sessions with mountain-backdrop photos — Late-afternoon wind plus a dramatic mountain silhouette is what makes this beach photogenic in a way many other kiting spots aren’t. Sunset sessions turn your kite into a silhouette against orange sky and jagged peaks — perfect for practice runs, frames for your feed, or just one of those “I can’t believe I’m here” moments. (Personal favorite.)
  • Stargazing and relaxed evening beach vibe — Kiting usually winds down after sunset, but that leaves the beach open for moonlit swims, star-filled skies if you head a little away from town lights, and mellow evenings on the sand. It’s not a party-only scene at night; think low-key hangouts, quiet bonfire-style chats (where allowed), and sampling local seaside food in nearby town rather than loud nightlife on the beach.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours – Expect roughly 11-13 hours of daylight during prime seasons. Enough time to squeeze in multiple sessions on the water without feeling like you’re racing the sunset, but not so long that you lose track of time and end up eating sand for dinner.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak season (summer) brings more tourists and local weekend warriors, which means crowded beaches and inflated prices. Off-peak months offer a quieter vibe, letting you claim your slice of shoreline without elbowing for space.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Spring and autumn align with local kitesurfing events and competitions, adding a dash of excitement and community without the chaos of high summer festivals. Winter is too chilly and inconsistent for reliable wind, while summer’s heat can sap your energy fast.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect accommodation and gear rental prices to spike in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons can save you a decent chunk of cash, which you can then spend on better food or an extra lesson to finally nail that tricky jump.

Pro-tip: Aim for late April or early October—when the wind’s just right, the crowds thin out, and your wallet doesn’t scream in protest. That’s when Kitesurf Beach feels like it was made just for you.

The social scene is vibrant without being overwhelming. You can swap stories over a cold drink or join a group for a sunset session on the beach. Safety is generally solid, but like anywhere, keep your wits about you.

Avoid the more touristy spots further inland; they lack the charm and community you’ll find here. Plus, who wants to schlep their gear miles away from the water? Embrace the absurdities of travel—like that one time your kite got tangled in a tree—and dive into the camaraderie of Kitesurf Beach. It’s where the grind meets the gold.
