Everyone’s cousin’s friend seems to swear Kenderli is “Kazakhstan’s Maldives.” It isn’t. It’s a semi-developed resort strip on the Caspian, in Mangystau Region in western Kazakhstan, a long, lonely drive from Aktau through proper desert nothingness. For backpackers, Kenderli Beach is a weird mix of low-key charm and mild disappointment: the water is warm and shallow, good for lazy floating, not for heroic swims or any real surf, and visibility is usually too murky to get excited about snorkeling or diving. The sand is decent, the scenery is more “end-of-the-world steppe meets sea” than postcard paradise, and cleanliness swings from “pretty tidy” near resorts to “plastic cameo appearances” further out.
