Backpacking in Peaks of the Balkan trail
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 23, 2026

Most people only realize on day two that the real advantage of the Peaks of the Balkans in Kosovo is how fast you drop into true high-mountain country with almost no approach hiking – you step off a minibus and you’re basically in the amphitheater. The Kosovo section sits in the far west, in the Accursed Mountains above towns like Peja and Deçan, with trailheads in villages such as Reka e Allagës and Babino Polje. It’s a multi-day, border-hopping route, but you can cherry-pick Kosovo stages: long, leg-burning climbs, loose scree, and snow patches early in the season, traded for big, jagged ridgelines and meadows that feel stolen from the Alps. Public transport gets you close, then you rely on taxis or guesthouse transfers. Compared with other Kosovo hikes, like the more mellow Rugova Gorge trails, this is sharper, wilder, and far less forgiving—but also far more addictive once you’ve earned that first beer in a mountain guesthouse.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Peaks of the Balkan trail

  1. Đeravica (Gjeravica) — Kosovo’s highest peak: Standing at about 2,656 m, it’s the classic high-point on the Kosovo leg — huge, exposed ridgelines with panoramic views into Albania and Montenegro, and that clean mountain feeling you don’t get on busier European trails.
  2. Gjeravica Lake (Liqeni i Gjeravicës): A small glacial lake tucked below the peak, perfect for a snack break or a cold-dip in summer; the turquoise water and rocky cirque make it feel properly alpine without any infrastructure around.
  3. Rugova Gorge and Peja valley: Dramatic limestone walls, narrow canyon hiking and waterfalls a short detour from the trail, plus the town of Peja at the gorge’s mouth where you can trade trail grime for çaj (tea) and local food — a rugged-meets-cultural contrast.

  4. Highland pastures and shepherd katuns: The trail threads through summer grazing areas where you’ll pass traditional stone huts, cheese-making spots and shepherds — great for cooks’ stories, fresh local dairy, and a real sense of how people still live with the mountains.
  5. Alpine wildlife and wildflower meadows: The Kosovo section is quiet and biodiverse — keep an eye out for chamois, marmots and soaring eagles, and in summer the meadows light up with endemic wildflowers; fewer crowds make wildlife encounters more likely than on busier routes.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for wildflower blooms and alpine meadows, while autumn paints the forests in fiery hues. Winter is off-limits for most, except hardcore snow trekkers with proper gear.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

The Peaks of the Balkan trail is a raw, unfiltered adventure. You’ll sweat it out on steep ascents, but when you finally crest that ridge and see the valleys unfold, it’s pure magic. Just know: the trails can be rugged and the signage sporadic. You’ll need to stay sharp and adaptable. But trust me, the reward of standing atop those peaks, with the wind in your hair and a cold beer waiting at the end, makes every step worth it.
