Backpacking in Mutla Ridge Trail
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 29, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Mutla Ridge as a “viewpoint drive,” but the surprising truth is that on foot it turns into a legit desert workout, with loose gravel climbs that will chew up anyone who shows up in flimsy city sneakers. Mutla Ridge sits in northern Kuwait, near Al Jahra, rising out of the flat desert like a long, low wall. The trail itself is more of a choose-your-own-line hike along service tracks and goat paths, with harsh, open sun, wind, dust, and big, bare horizons instead of postcard scenery. You get wide views over oil fields, highways, and raw desert, not alpine drama, but at sunset the colors finally earn the sweat. It’s short to moderate in length and technically easy, but the heat and exposure make it feel tougher. Public transport is weak to nonexistent, so you’re basically committing to a car or taxi, yet compared to other Kuwait “hikes,” Mutla at least makes your legs work.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Mutla Ridge Trail

  1. Summit Panorama (sunrise or sunset) — The ridge’s main draw is height: little in Kuwait gets you a true horizon. From the top you get sweeping, 180-360° views of the desert, the distant Kuwait City skyline and the Gulf on clear days — perfect timing for golden-hour photos and to appreciate how flat everything else is.
  2. Wind-sculpted rock and ridge anatomy — The escarpment’s layered, weathered limestone and sand formations show dramatic erosion and texture you won’t find on typical dune hikes. Walk the crest to see exposed bedding, small cliffs and interesting rock shapes that change with the light.
  3. Desert flora and small wildlife highlights — It’s worth hiking after winter rains: shrubs flush green, small wildflowers appear, and you’ll spot lizards, passerine birds and fresh fox or hare

  3. Desert flora and small wildlife highlights — It’s worth hiking after winter rains: shrubs flush green, small wildflowers appear, and you’ll spot lizards, passerine birds and fresh fox or hare tracks. That micro-life contrast against the barren plain is one of the trail’s quieter pleasures.
  4. Birdwatching and migratory stopover points — The ridge is a useful lookout for migrants and desert specialists in season — larks, wheatears and sandgrouse are the most likely. Being elevated gives better lines of sight than the surrounding flats, so bring binoculars.
  5. Night-sky and solitude stretches — Far enough from city lights to make the Milky Way pop on clear nights, the ridge offers calm, open camping or bivy spots (where allowed). The sense of space and silence up there makes it feel more like wilderness than most Kuwait hikes.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

The Mutla Ridge Trail offers a straightforward yet invigorating hike, but don’t let its accessibility fool you—there are nuances to navigate. The terrain is rocky and can be steep in sections, so good footwear is essential. A sturdy pair of hiking boots will keep your footing secure as you tackle the ups and downs.

Weather can shift quickly, especially in the summer heat. Start early to beat the sun and stay hydrated; carry enough water to last the trek. The trail is well-marked, but a map or GPS can help you stay oriented, especially if you wander off the main path.

Wildlife is minimal, but you might spot a lizard or two. Keep your distance and respect their space. As for trail etiquette, be courteous—step aside for faster hikers and keep noise to a minimum to soak in the tranquility.
