The National County Sports Meet began as a post-independence gathering where counties sent athletes to the capital, and for decades it was a dusty, government-run affair. Then civil war stopped it, and today it has returned as a loud, crowded, county-pride tournament. It is held in Liberia, with the Paynesville and Monrovia area on the coast serving as the usual hub, and host counties rotating, so the venue shifts between editions. Expect football and track events, with drummers, whistles and chanting county delegations filling the stands. Red dust, grilled meat smoke and sweat-soaked jerseys are part of the day. Schedules slip, power cuts happen, and seating is basic. It lasts roughly two weeks, with finals at the end. You will like it most if you want a local crowd, no tourist filter and lots of conversation. If you need polished facilities, firm timetables or quiet, skip it.

If the town is full, look at Monrovia, the capital, and commute by shared taxi or minibus. Monrovia has far more hostels, backpacker-friendly guesthouses and other travelers to share rides with, and Congo Town and Sinkor are the most popular areas for budget visitors. The downside is a long, early start on rough roads, and returning after dark is best avoided.
Book ahead for the opening and final weekends. Ask your host about a safe ride home, keep valuables out of sight in crowds, and agree on a price before every motorbike trip.
