Semporna sits on the east coast of Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo, facing the Celebes Sea. As a base, it’s chaotic, salty, and functional rather than pretty, with stilt villages, busy jetties, and basic seafood joints instead of charming promenades. It’s cheap, easy to arrange island trips, and you’ll meet other divers instantly, but nightlife is minimal, safety requires basic street sense after dark, and compared to Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan, Semporna feels more frontier than city.
