Backpacking in Semporna
👌 Worth visitingtown ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 2, 2026

Most people online talk about Semporna like it’s a pure dive gateway, but the surprise is how rough-around-the-edges the town feels compared to the polished images of Sipadan’s reefs. Semporna sits on the east coast of Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo, facing the Celebes Sea. As a base, it’s chaotic, salty, and functional rather than pretty, with stilt villages, busy jetties, and basic seafood joints instead of charming promenades. It’s cheap, easy to arrange island trips, and you’ll meet other divers instantly, but nightlife is minimal, safety requires basic street sense after dark, and compared to Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan, Semporna feels more frontier than city.

Ranked #14 town in Malaysia
Why Semporna should be on your travel list

Semporna is a backpacker’s hub that balances affordability with accessibility. It’s a strategic basecamp for day trips to nearby islands, making it easy to dive into the region’s underwater wonders. The hostels here are budget-friendly and often buzzing with fellow travelers, creating a vibrant community. You’ll find local food stalls serving up delicious meals without breaking the bank. The city is walkable, allowing you to explore at your own pace, and the nightlife offers a laid-back vibe perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. If you’re on a longer route, Semporna is worth a stop; if you’re short on time, it’s still a solid choice for a quick taste of Malaysian coastal life.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Semporna

  1. Semporna Waterfront / Esplanade — The town’s beating heart: a seawall and promenade lined with food stalls, fishermen mending nets, and great sunset views. It’s the easiest place to feel the town’s marine rhythm and watch small island boats come and go.
  2. Semporna Main Jetty (Semporna Harbour) — The practical and chaotic hub for all island departures. Walking the jetty gives a close-up window into local boat culture, island operators, loading of catches and gear, and is where your island day trips actually start.
  3. Semporna Central Market (Pasar Besar / Fish Market) — Early-morning fish auctions, piles of fresh reef and pelagic catches, live crustaceans and local produce. It’s the best place to see where Semporna’s seafood economy comes from and to sample or buy incredibly fresh ingredients.

  4. Bajau Laut stilt village(s) near town — Short boat rides from the shore take you to authentic stilt-house settlements of the Bajau (sea nomads). Visiting shows traditional sea-based living, local handicrafts, small homestay possibilities and an intimate cultural exchange rarely seen in big cities.
  5. Night Market & Seafood Row — After dark the waterfront fills with makeshift grills and plastic tables serving freshly bought fish and shellfish cooked to order. Cheap, social and delicious—this is where locals eat and visitors get the best affordable seafood experience in town.
Nearby day-trip highlights include Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai islands and the Tun Sakaran Marine Park — my personal favorite to dive is Sipadan.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and tours spike in the dry season’s peak months. Booking early or traveling shoulder season can save you a significant chunk without sacrificing much comfort.

Pro-tip: Aim for late April or early October—weather’s solid, crowds thin, and prices dip. You get the best bang for your buck and a smoother experience.

Venture too far from this core, and you trade convenience for quiet—areas like the outskirts are safer but lack the social pulse and easy access to transport. The town center’s hostels often double as community hubs, making it easier to meet fellow travelers and swap tips. In Semporna, proximity to the jetty isn’t just about saving time; it’s about plugging into the rhythm of the town and the diving culture that defines it.

🚌 Getting aroundGetting around like a local

Semporna moves at its own rhythm—a blend of laid-back island time and the sharp pulse of a fishing town where schedules bend to the tides and the whims of the sea. It’s not a place where you’ll find rigid timetables or polished transit hubs. Instead, expect a dance of informal minibuses, motorbikes, and boats, where bargaining and timing are part of the game. The flow here rewards those who read the local cues and embrace a bit of unpredictability, turning travel logistics into a strategic puzzle rather than a chore.

  • Walking: The most reliable and cost-free way to get around Semporna town itself. Streets are compact and easy to navigate on foot, though expect uneven pavement and occasional crowds near markets. Walking lets you soak in the local vibe without spending a dime.

  • Trishaw (Pedicab): A slow but charming option for short hops within town. Prices are negotiable but usually under 5 MYR. It’s not about speed or comfort—think of it as a moving conversation with the driver, perfect for quick errands or a scenic ride through the market area.

  • Local Minibuses (Van Vans): These shared vans connect Semporna to nearby villages and towns like Tawau. They run roughly from 7 AM to 6 PM, cost around 10-15 MYR, and offer a no-frills, sometimes cramped ride. Speed varies with road conditions, but they’re essential for budget travelers heading beyond Semporna.

  • Motorbike Taxis (Ojek): Fast and flexible, these are your go-to for beating traffic or reaching spots inaccessible to larger vehicles. Prices start at about 5 MYR for short distances. Helmets are often optional, so bring your own if safety matters to you.

  • Boat Transfers: The gateway to the islands and dive spots around Semporna. Boats depart irregularly, often early morning, with prices from 30 MYR upwards depending on destination. Comfort varies widely—expect basic seating and open decks. Timing your trip with the tide and weather is crucial here.
