Pretty Bay is not Malta’s answer to the Maldives; the Instagram angles just hide the container ships. It sits in Birżebbuġa, down in the south, right opposite the Marsaxlokk industrial port. For backpackers, it’s a weirdly useful spot: sandy, easy to reach by bus, shallow water that’s fine for a quick swim, and cheap takeaway joints and budget rooms just behind the promenade. But the sand can feel a bit grubby, the view is cranes not cliffs, and it gets busy with locals. No real surf, mediocre snorkelling. Compared with Marsaxlokk’s rocky coves or the postcard beaches up north, Pretty Bay is convenience, not magic.
