Your toes hit the water and it’s colder than the Caribbean in your imagination had any right to be, while a brown pelican dive-bombs ten meters away like it owns the bay and your backpack sits in the sand collecting black grains that will haunt your gear for months. Anse Couleuvre hides at the far north of Martinique, past Le Prêcheur, where the road basically gives up and the jungle takes over. For backpackers, it’s a high-effort, high-reward beach: dark sand, dramatic cliffs, clean water, usually light on crowds, and a wild, almost end-of-the-world vibe. Swimming is good but can be rough with currents; surf is inconsistent, snorkeling decent near the rocks, not world-class. Access is annoying without a car, food options are minimal, and budget beds are back toward Le Prêcheur or Saint-Pierre, so compared with easier southern spots like Les Salines or Anse Dufour, this one feels less “day at the beach” and more “mini expedition with sand.”
