- Seasonal floodplains and lagoons — the park is basically a patchwork of shallow lagoons and flooded plains that change with the river; when the water’s in, it turns into a shimmering maze that’s spectacular for photos and easy to explore by foot or boat.
- Migratory and water birds — huge numbers of flamingos, pelicans, herons, egrets and diving ducks pass through or stop to feed. Birdwatching is the main draw here; bring binoculars and patience.
- Quiet boat trips through reed-lined channels — local pirogues slip into narrow waterways so you can get close to nesting islands and feeding flocks without spooking them. Far better than shouting from the bank.

- Dune-wetland ecotone — one moment you’re in marsh grass and waterbirds, the next you’re at the base of sandy dunes. That contrast is unusual and gives you short, interesting walks without going far.
- Chance to spot the West African manatee (rare) — sightings are infrequent, but deeper river channels are habitat for the elusive West African manatee. Don’t count on it, but know the park is one of the few places in the region where it’s possible.
- Sunset over the delta — long, flat horizons make for dramatic evenings: flamingos silhouetted on mudflats, pastel skies and reflections on shallow water. Pack a thermos and stay until the light fades.
