- Crater-rim hike — A short but punchy walk to the rim gives one of the best panoramas in central Mongolia: the jagged crater lip, Khangai Mountains and the lake below. Easy to do in a couple of hours and my personal favorite for sunrise light.
- Inside the crater (scoria bowl) — Walk down into the bowl of the cinder cone and feel how raw the volcanic materials are: loose scoria, steep slopes and a real sense of recent geology compared with the surrounding steppe.
- Lava fields and basalt formations — Blocky lava flows and fractured basalt create stark, black textures that contrast with green meadows and the lake shore — great for photos and geology nerding without needing special gear.

- Views over Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (White Lake) — The volcano and its flows helped shape the valley and the lake’s shoreline; from several viewpoints you get dramatic shots of dark lava against pale water and broad sky.
- Wildflowers, marmots and birdlife — The alpine-steppe around Khorgo blooms in summer; marmots whistle from burrows and you can spot raptors and waterbirds near the lake — a surprising biodiversity pocket in an otherwise austere landscape.
- Camping under dark skies — Remote location + almost no light pollution = incredible stars. Pitch a tent near the lake or beside the lava for proper silence and a spectacular Milky Way show.
- Nearby nomadic culture and gers — Herders camp in the area; pop into a ger for salty milk tea, hand-knit felt, and a quick chat about living with the land — cheap, human, and memorable.
