Most people only realize after they leave that Ryongaksan is one of the few North Korean hikes where you can get a real mountain feel without losing half your trip to bus transfers and logistics. Ryongaksan sits just southwest of Pyongyang, close enough that it’s usually a half‑day or day trip rather than an expedition. As a backpacker, you get solid trails, rocky viewpoints, and forested slopes, but it’s more “city escape” than deep wilderness. Wildlife is limited and skittish, and you’ll be on a fixed route with a guide, so no true off‑trail exploring, wild camping, or independent budget stays.
