You know what nobody tells you about Wonsan Beach until you’re already there? The sand is right in the city, so you can “hit the beach” and still be back in your guesthouse before your hair’s dry, instead of doing a three-hour bus-and-permit relay. Wonsan Beach sits on the east coast of North Korea, along the Sea of Japan (East Sea), basically the waterfront of Wonsan city itself. For backpackers, it’s oddly pleasant: wide, fairly clean by local standards, with mellow, swimmable water and a low-key, almost retro holiday-town vibe. Crowds are mostly domestic groups on organized outings, so don’t expect solitude or spontaneous beach bars. Surf is usually nothing to write home about, and there’s no real dive or snorkel scene. Compared with more controlled resort-style beaches like Majon near Hamhung, Wonsan feels more lived-in, cheaper for snacks and basic stays, and just chaotic enough to feel like you’ve slipped behind the postcard.
