- Popova Šapka — The classic gateway: a small ski resort with marked trails, a chairlift (season-dependent) and excellent access to high-altitude walking. Great for quick day-hikes, sunrise/sunset views, and a fast route into the alpine zone without a multi-day trek.
- Ljuboten Peak — That sharp, photogenic limestone peak you can spot from the valley. It’s a popular day-hike for hikers who want steep terrain, good scrambling sections and wide panoramas of the whole Šar range without having to carry a heavy pack.
- High ridgeline and long-distance routes — The Šar ridgeline runs long and wild: multi-day trekking terrain, high pastures, and exposed summits. Walkers who like route-finding and thin crowds will love the endless vistas and the feeling of being above everything.

- Scattered glacial lakes — Small, mirror-like alpine tarns tucked into cirques. They’re quiet, photogenic and great places to rest, cool off, and camp (where allowed). In late spring and summer the reflections and wildflowers make for seriously pretty scenes.
- Wildlife hotspots — Šar is one of the Balkans’ strongholds for big mountain wildlife: chamois, brown bears, wolves, raptors and—very occasionally—the critically endangered Balkan lynx. Bring binoculars, move quietly and temper expectations, but you’ll see birds and chamois on most hikes.
- Shepherds’ katuns and summer pastures — The human side of the mountains: stone huts, grazing flocks, fresh cheese and simple hospitality. Visiting a katun gives a real sense of how people have lived here for centuries and makes for a sweet cultural stop between peaks.
- Alpine meadows and endemic plants — In late spring and early summer the high meadows explode with wildflowers and rare alpine species. Botanists and photographers will enjoy the variety; even casual walkers notice the carpets of color and the intense mountain scents.
