Palestine is something else than the average holiday destination. And I think I can say it’s the country which has made the most impact on me ever, even more than North Korea. In North Korea the situation may be worse but there they only show you what they want to show whereas in Palestina you are free to move around and explore. And the situation in Palestine was way worse than I thought it was. You just start to forget what’s happening somewhere when the media shift to something more sexy. And though it’s nothing close to a real war situation, this is maybe as close as you can get to it as a normal tourist. This very intense week I ended up spending talking with many Palestinians who each gave their own view on the situation, ranging from “let’s keep it as it is” to “we should conquer our country back”. The general feeling however is that people just want to be able to continue living their live they’ve lived long before without continuous fear, checkpoints, intimidation and walls around each city.
